Can't get tablet to show desktop bar 'X' to close program
Until yesterday I could close programs on our Lenovo W10 tablet by
touching at the top of the screen and then tapping the 'X' at the right hand end of the bar that pops down. Now I can't get this bar to appear at all in tablet mode. I've tried f11 when a keyboard is attached but it has no effect. Is there a way to reactivate the bar in tablet mode or is this a new 'feature'? Mpois |

If you click the desktop surface and then alt-f4, the windows shutdown menu will appear. And in the Windows 8.0 era, it was the only way to close a Metro App, because there was no "X" in the upper right corner during Windows 8.0. Windows 8.1 fixed that and added an "X" in the corner. ******* Based on some "weird stuff" that was happening today after a Windows Defender update, I recommend rebooting. Normally, I would not expect a reboot to do anything, but my symptoms cleared up after a reboot. Paul |

Can't get tablet to show desktop bar 'X' to close program
Thanks,
The tablet is used by my wife who is not very computer literate. She always uses it in tablet mode. If it is changed to desktop mode then the title bar with the 'x' appears. As for 'alt f4' - how do you do that using the on screen keyboard which seems limited in its capabilities. I was wondering it there is a registry setting (I'm sure ther must be) that can be edited but I have no idea which. We've rebooted a few times but to no effect. Any more ideas please. Mpois |

Mpois Well, I put the laptop in "tablet" mode, and now I'm really out of ideas. I couldn't manage to jam it in "full screen" mode for example. And there's no point of me testing desktop applications that happen to support full screen, because they have a control to get out of full screen. In terms of general window terminology, there are three modes. 1) Windowed (small box, with decorations, has "X") 2) Maximized (decorated box fills the screen, has "X") 3) FullScreen (decorations are pushed off screen, so that the video pane playing, takes up the full screen) Now, in (3), there would be no "X". But there would be a controls-bar near the bottom, with a full screen symbol, as well as pressing the Esc key returns you to maximized mode. Which does have decorations. Well, I put my 16299 laptop in Tablet node, and I could get (1) and (2) quite easily. Always with - Box X decorations. I could not get anything to do (3) mode. If I could do that, I could demonstrate a loss of decorations, as a potential mode. And the tablet mode on my laptop was a mess, because I don't have a touch panel. So I've flipped it back to desktop mode, and I won't be trying that a second time. Too frustrating. Yet another half-finished GUI jigsaw puzzle. And in terms of hot keys 1) F11 did nothing at all 2) Alt-F4 didn[t work, with maybe one exception. My magic bullet wasn't a lot of help. So even any keyboard tricks didn't really work worth a darn. Not good. It's obviously an environment in need of gestures, and without a touch screen, I just can't enter anything tablet mode "likes". ******* Sorry, can't think of another thing to try, except using a Restore point to return to a time before the problem showed up. Maybe it was caused by an update. Paul |

Is there a way to reactivate the bar in tablet mode or is this a new 'feature'? In WHAT app? Every app? If just one app, likely you resized its window so it is bigger than the screen. When the app's window has focus, hit Alt+Spacebare to activate the window's control menu then hit S (to [re]size) and use the left/right/up/down arrow keys to resize the window. The first arrow key you hit decides which edge of the window to move, so hit up arrow first if it is the top edge you want to move, and then hit the down arrow to bring down the top edge. If the top edge of all windows are outside the monitor's top edge then the screen size is bigger than the monitor's size and you'll have to use the video driver's software controls to resize the screen to match the monitor. The screen resolution might equal the native resolution of the monitor but the screen position could be off. Some applications can go into fullscreen mode. No, not a maximized window (that still has a menu bar) but fullscreened (with no menu). Often moving the mouse cursor to the top of the screen will temporarily drop down the menu bar. For many apps, F11 puts the app into fullscreen mode, so hit F11 to take it out of fullscreen mode. |

For many apps, F11 puts the app into fullscreen mode, so hit F11 to take it out of fullscreen mode. It seems that all apps in tablet mode are full screen with no menu and touching at the top of the screen doesn't temporarily drop down the menu bar. This is what changed yesterday - before that the menu bar did drop down temporarily and allowed for simple closure. For now my wife just swipes the whole of the window to the bottom of the screen as a quick and simple alternative to close the program. I'll check what (if any) updates were installed automatically yesterday and if possible I'll try and uninstall them and see what happens. Mpois |

Following the updates this last 'patch tuesday' (12/12/17) the desktop
bar has now been reactivated so I guess it has been put right by MS. |
