Default Icon storage for shortcuts.

Win10 latest.

I notice desktop shortcut-icons are stored in..

%SystemRoot%\System32\SHELL32.dll

How are other custom icons (eg from Axialis) to be stored there?

In general, you can't edit system files. They're signed
to detect tampering.

Programs can store their own private resources. When you build
a project in Visual Studio, that would give an opportunity to
add an icon resource. If the program wasn't signed, you may
be able to edit it, with tools like this.

If on the other hand, you "just wanted to look" at the
structure, 7ZIP can open EXE files and show the structure.
In this picture, I use GIMP photo editor to open the
top icon resource shown in the 7ZIP window. As expected,
it's an orange safety cone.

They aren't. Only the icons in shell32.dll are stored in shell32.dll.
Any other icons are stored in different file or files.

Ditto what others say.
I myself have a large custom set of icons I use for desktop shortcuts
like 'Downloads', 'Wallpaper', and others. I make them with Greenfish
Icon Editor Pro. It's free, not sure why they call it Pro other than
the stigma that goes with the word Pro.

You can download PNG images and import them into GFIE and make your own
ICO files. If you know the background of how and what ICO files are
then it would be simple. Otherwise you have a bit of a learning curve
other than the program to get over.

I've made a Alan.dll file much like the shell32.dll file and it contains
some 250 icons I have used at some point in time. If you wonder why so
many, well, if you use icon # 44 and then later delete #22, well icon #
44 becomes #43 and so do a lot more. So basically your entire desktop
etc changes icons. A bit scary.

Anyway, it's there if you want to play.

There is a program 'Icon From Files' that is around. It extracts
icons from programs. Not sure of dlls. I have used it, not sure with
Win 10.

Thanks for all replies. My Axialis icon softwear can save files as
ico files. But these ico files don't always last and can revert back
to the old default pictures.

The system icons on the LHS of File Explorer seem unable to be
altered.

I noticed that all (most maybe) of the folders in your home folder will
change but change back. I can change desktop icons easily and I can
change subfolders easily. I make a folder in Pictures call Wallpaper
and I make it a cute icon and that stickes.
Yes 10 is a bitch.
