It's only available from the Windows Store (you have to use the Windows
8 interface)

Another trick is to use a Windows 8.1 DVD.

When I bought my $39.95 copy of Windows 8.0 Pro for download,
I kept my purchase details.

You can do downloads multiple times. What you do today, is pretend to
download 8.0, then abort the download just after it starts, and using
the credentials stored on your PC, then download Windows 8.1.

http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/wi...-8-product-key

There are things called "install-only keys", which will not
activate an OS, but can be used long enough to install. Then,
you can use slmgr to change to the Windows 8.0 key.

I didn't read all the comments in the comment section of the above page,
but there should be some procedure out there now that avoids
the App Store method. I still haven't been to the App Store.

I don't have my bookmarks file on this machine, so it's
hard to dig up more links. My main machine is in Linux right
now, copying a disk.

The whole point of doing it this way, is to avoid a
Microsoft Account. My W8 install uses a local account,
and eventually when I do the Windows 8.1 update it will stay
that way.

I recommend a backup before you proceed, just so you can get
things the way you want them.

Windows 8.1 is not available via Windows Updates. Never was, never will be.

To upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 (as long as the Win8 unit meets 8.1
requirements), logon with a MSFT account, click on the Store icon on the
modern UI. The 8.1 upgrade will be available.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...m-requirements

If using Win 8.0 is 64-bit ensure the hardware meets the 64 bit requirement.
"To install a 64-bit OS on a 64-bit PC, your processor needs to
support CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW, and LAHF/SAHF"

Most 8.0 built pcs do...some older units that were upgraded from an
earlier o/s to 8.0 may not meet 8.1 requirements.

Ah, I have to do it through Store and not Windows Updates like previous
Windows versions. Thanks.

If I had one, but isn't there an update patch file for offline
installations? My download is slow. also, I did not buy it online
(retail store).

I see it in MS Store, but does it really require a MS account? I never
wanted those online accounts to use OS. :P

I haven't tried this yet, but under the Control Panel and Windows
Updates, there is a link to "Add features to Windows 8". It might be
listed there too (you need your product key handy). Otherwise I believe
you can get it through an URL.

This is what everyone wants, but they're not giving us one.

With modern OSes, you'd better have a broadband account.

I *(believe* that I updated without having an MS account.

There's no MS account in my password file, so apparently that's correct
- and I *did* update to 8.1. I think there's a hoop or two to jump
through, but honestly, I have forgotten the details.

I used the MS App Store, that much I remember.

Oh you can't get into the Metro Store tile without a MS password. I
don't logon with the MS password, but some Metro apps ask you for it
once and they remember. And thus I am always allowed in even if I am
just logged in with just a Windows logon password. It only works for the
apps you gave it once for.

Any email account will do as it fullfills the "requirement"; ms just
want an email addr not necessarily from a ms service. Just get
another gmail, yahoo, hotmail or other free email account that don't
require personal info as in addr & phone number, etc.

A note about the Hotmail account that ms (Hotmail) had instituted
removal/deletion of the email account if it wasn't used for 9 months;
should do for getting the 8.1 update & no need to access it again
unless 8.x or 9.x is free.......

Win 8.1 isn't a feature. It's an o/s upgrade.

Media Center is a feature
- $10 if using Win 8x Pro
- not available for Win8 Core, or Win8 Enterprise

Use of any email address registers the email address as a Microsoft
Account. g

i.e. its been over a decade that just about any email address can be
registered as a Microsoft Account (fka Passport, NetPassport, Hotmail,
Windows Live)
- all Hotmail type accounts (Hotmail, Msn, Live, Outlook.com) and 3rd
party email addresses can be Microsoft accounts...and they all come with
the web based services (Inbox, Contacts, Calendar, SkyDrive, Office Apps)
