Unable to download and install W8.1 from MS App Store to upgrade W8.0 machines.
Hello.
I am having problems downloading and installing W8.1 update from MS App Store due to these error: http://i.imgur.com/joyNfqZ.gif ... This was also a brand new administrator account. I created it from Windows' classic control panel. I did notice this client's machine autologins when booting Windows up hence why I made a new local administrator (NewAdmin name) Windows account due to http://i.imgur.com/Tq0Cfvd.gif error. I am not sure if that is related? What's wrong and how do I fix it? Thank you in advance. -- Quote of the Week: "I got an ant farm; them fellas didn't grow sh*t." --Mitch Hedberg /\___/\ Ant(Dude) @ http://antfarm.home.dhs.org (Personal Web Site) / /\ /\ \ Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net | |o o| | \ _ / Please nuke ANT if replying by e-mail. In m,
Ant typed: That is the same thing I did earlier through Control Panel I(hate W8's gestures with a desktop mouse -- ugh). I use both all of the time. And I can't think of anything that requires only gestures. Everything you can do with the desktop mouse can also be done with the keyboard alone as well. Well nothing that comes off of the top of my head anyway. -- Bill Motion Computing LE1700 Tablet ('09 era) - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core2 Duo L7400 1.5GHz - 2GB RAM Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 SP2 |

From the desktop, all of the Windows 8.1 control parameters can be accessed by right clicking MS Icon in the lower left corner of the desktop screen. These include the Shutdown functions, control panel, task manager, all of the network functions, etc. Since Windows 8.1 can boot directly to the desktop and if windows 8.1 is properly set up you will never need to see the metro (I believe that is what it is called) interface again. |

Search for "Access administrator account on Windows 8". A user account with admin privileges does not in fact have all admin rights. I found this out when I wanted to run the chkdsk command. Interesting. I will have to look at the details on that. W8 is sure driving me nuts! -- Quote of the Week: "I got an ant farm; them fellas didn't grow sh*t." --Mitch Hedberg /\___/\ Ant(Dude) @ http://antfarm.home.dhs.org (Personal Web Site) / /\ /\ \ Ant's Quality Foraged Links: http://aqfl.net | |o o| | \ _ / Please nuke ANT if replying by e-mail. You can do it with Windows 8, by using one of the several excellent third-party programs (some are free, but my favorite is the $4.99 US Start8). (I believe that is what it is called) interface again. Back in its beta test days, it was called Metro. Today, it's called Modern. |

I am so puzzled why this is such a big deal? I didn't add or do any special hacks to Windows 8.0 and I usually end it by going to standby or hibernating. So when I hit the power button or wake it up, it pops up right were I left it (with all of the applications I had opened before and everything). Ok the rare times I have to power down or reboot or something it goes to the Start Screen. Okay one click on the desktop tile and your right back to the desktop (or the desktop key if you have a special Windows 8 keyboard - I have a Logitech K400R keyboard). Now I really hate a lot more extra mouse clicks, keyboard presses, etc. or anything normally. But this is nothing really. Jump to the desktop at this point and you still have to wait for the desktop to fully load anyway. So all of this fuss is about one click and that is all? Gee, I don't complain until I could save two or more extra steps. -- Bill Motion Computing LE1700 Tablet ('09 era) - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core2 Duo L7400 1.5GHz - 2GB RAM Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 SP2 |

Win7 kept the option to keep the "classic" GUI which has been used since 1995. The move to "Metro" or "Modern" was just too much for many people. Somewhere around the year 2000 I built a Win98 machine for a friend of mine who had been using computers in her office since 1982. I assumed she'd have no problems. A few days after I built the machine she called me almost screaming with fear. She needed to put a document on a floppy and did not know what to do. She said she could do it from her computer at work...but not from her home computer. Turns out that the floppy drive icon was in a slightly different place and she was lost. Can you imagine this person using Win8 ? Now multiply that times millions of people. |

You missed the point I made that I never see the Modern interface and do everything from the desktop, Every program I use is used on the desktop. I always shut the computer down, rarely use the hibernate functions, though it is nice when your are waiting in a doctor's office |

I frequently have 6 to 10 windows open at a time in the Desktop. My windows may be a couple of browser windows, a Spreadsheet, word processors. a several Pdf files, a couple of image files, etc. And as I do my research project I am currently bringing up several so I can compare the data, or copy it into the word processor, or spreadsheet. |

I really think that with Win8... if it is installed on any machine with a touch screen, it should default to "Modern". But with any non-touch screen...it should default to the same GUI as Win7 Once there, an easy option should be available for the user to switch to the other interface. I have a lot of friends who bought new machines within the last year and none of them like Win8 as it ships. |
