Unable to download and install W8.1 from MS App Store to upgrade W8.0 machines.

The real problem (I think) is that people learn to use their computers
by rote. Win7 kept the option to keep the "classic" GUI which has been
used since 1995. The move to "Metro" or "Modern" was just too much for
many people.


Somewhere around the year 2000 I built a Win98 machine for a friend of
mine who had been using computers in her office since 1982. I assumed
she'd have no problems.

A few days after I built the machine she called me almost screaming
with fear. She needed to put a document on a floppy and did not know
what to do.
She said she could do it from her computer at work...but not from her
home computer.

Turns out that the floppy drive icon was in a slightly different place
and she was lost. Can you imagine this person using Win8 ?


Now multiply that times millions of people.

Oh my! That reminds me of an experience from the late 80's. One pen pal
back then loved to chat about computers and virtually everything back
then was command based (CLI). And at some point I started to stated how
excited I was about playing with GUI OS. I knew back then they couldn't
beat the power of the command line, but I knew that would change in time
(it actually had taken a few years longer than I thought).

Anyway she asked what was so great about GUI OS? And I said all you do
is to point and click. And what she said I was totally shocked. She said
to click and point on what? I was dumbfounded! I just didn't get what
was so hard?

Same thing is happening with the Metro Interface. It is like the GUI vs
CLI war all over again. So many are complaining about the Metro, but I
use lots of OS and I think Microsoft got this interface right (ok it is
going to get better yet). It was so easy for me to get it and it is
better than what other OS are doing. And even if you really hate Metro
altogether, it is just one click away and it is gone.

Oh man! I don't understand the big deal. One click and you are are the
desktop. Now I really hate extra work for anything, but this one is no
big deal for me. I do play with the Metro Interface from time to time
and some of them I actually like. Nothing like a must have or anything,
but neither was the GUI when it first came out. Now look at you and you
can't live without the Windows Desktop. Microsoft went from CLI (Command
Line Interface) to GUI and now to Tiles is completely no big deal. If
you want to stay in the old days, I totally get that. As I can do all of
them and it isn't really a big deal.

OK, I finally got the password for the original administrator account
and was able to download. I also found out that the new accounts I
made/created were still in standard, and not administrator! I had to
edit their types. W8 sure changed on how to make accounts too. Now, I am
currently SLOWLY downloading W8.1 up(grade/date) from MS App Store.

I love being right. Either way, you'll like Windows 8.1. It is exactly
what the OS needed to be from the first version. You can always run it
in default mode where the new UI takes over, or by going into the
Desktop and right-clicking the taskbar, you can set it up to either run
exactly as Windows 7 did or create a sort of hybrid of the two as I did.
My preferred preference was for it to boot to Desktop and that the tile
screen use the same background wallpaper as the Desktop. This way, when
I click on the Start button, it doesn't seem to migrate away from
familiar territory and only seems to present a new type of Start menu
rather than a complete overhaul of the system, as such becoming quite a
lovely operating system.

big deal to figure out...but a lot of the people who can't use it and
hate it are half my age. (I'm 64 and was around in the punch card days)


My personal preference is just a simple hierarchical context menu.
I mostly use Gnome or Xfce on Linux.
Classic interface on Windows.

In Windows 8.0 (and new 8.1 pcs)...the first account created on first
use is an admin account. All accounts created thereafter are standard
user accounts until the account is created, signed on, then signed off,
and the admin account is logged on and changes the that created account
to an account with admin privilege.

i.e. An admin account is the only account that can create another
account and once created change that created account to an admin account.

i.e. Logon with an admin account, create an account, logoff admin, sign
in with new account, let Windows create the profile, logoff, logon
admin, change new account from standard to admin.

Since 8.1 can load right to the desktop..that 'one click' isn't even
necessary.

Gnome 3's interface is a much more extreme change than Metro is IMO. The
way Gnome 3 works is completely unintuitive and, due to its lack of
/direct/ customization features, quite ugly to boot. XFCE, on the other
hand, is much better though it is about as sophisticated as Windows 95
would be if released in 2014.

I'd suggest you consider MATE if holding onto Gnome 2 is a priority for
you. Unlike Cinnamon which was created as a substitute for the default
Gnome 3 using their libraries but looking a lot more like Gnome 2, MATE
is an actual fork of Gnome 2 and serves more as an update than a whole
new environment.

All working fine here. I'm done fooling with it. I was having problems
with themes so removed them all. Don't need anything but the basics.

Thanks. That was confused me. I didn't know you had to set the
administrator type after making a new account. However, I don't even
remember the option to set the account type during the new account

Boo. It failed overnight. I saw it idling at a boot up(?) with
diagnostic stuff.
