Default Question about external HDDs.

Windows Creator.

I have this device connected to a USB3 port on a PCIe card.
http://www.raidsonic.de/products/ext...0CL-U3_gal.jpg

The SSD shown in it I use for eMule & uTorrent downloads, so as to
free up space on the system HDD.

I switch it on and off at will because it's hot wired, but the stored
data on it will not feed into eMule & uTorrent programs on the system
HDD.
Also, the Windows File Explorer I get two instances of the disks in
this device as shown here....
https://postimg.org/image/2wnj2a4nt7/
Whe
ARCHIVE Mov N is the HDD
INTEL O is the eMule & uTorrent depository SSD.

Why are there two instances of each disk displayed in File Explorer?
Why doesn't the data on "INTEL O" feed directly into eMule & uTorrent?
Is there some restrictions as to when this external device can be
switched on/off?

Are you using Safely Remove ?

Are you using a utility to "encourage" redetection later ?
Some USB devices had the annoying habit of "staying ejected"
and there was some sort of program to scan for them and
help bring them back.

It might depend on whether the USB portion of
an enclosure, gets power cycled when you use the switch.
Mine doesn't. The power switch removes drive power (from
the drive that spun down when I did "Safely remove"). The
USB portion stays powered. I might have to unplug and
replug it, if trying to get the drive in the enclosure
detected.

Really, the OS should notice it's gone, and remove
state info, such as entries in File Explorer.

Uwe has a tool here, but there might be other tools out there
which recover from more conditions. The RestartSrDev thing.

http://www.uwe-sieber.de/drivetools_e.html#RemoveDrive

RemoveDrive

RestartSrDev USB\VID_0781*PID_5406*

And TreeView can give you info about plugged in USb stuff.

Thanks Paul,

It all works if:

1/ The external drives are running when the computer is switched off.
Then switch off those drives.

2/ Switch on those drives before starting up the computer.

But there are still two instances of each of those drives in Explorer.

That is a 'feature'. A google search will show you how to turn off the
USB duplicate drives. Don't lose the info, since they come back with
major updates.

It's not all that complicated.

I just figured it was a stupid Windows 10 thing and have been
ignoring.

+1

But on my system, 1 instance is under the higher directory named
"This PC" which when expanded, all the partitions are listed.
The 2nd instance of the usb drive is at the same level as "This PC",
which I surmized as to be the list of drives like 'onedrive', network,
& homegroup.

Much less of a problem than on my Mac Mini with 10.12 OSx which
insist on having Bluetooth keyboard/pad & mouse......& ignore that
there is a wired usb keyboard & mouse connected.

I have an external hard drive unit that plugs into a parallel
printer port and works with early DOS machines.
It has a 100 MB SCSI hard drive.
