Very little traffic - postings - on "Basics". The last few weeks. Could be
the server is dropping many
posts?

It has been mentioned that Microsoft no longer has news groups on their
servers and thus the majority of readers went to forums.

It's because the server where the bulk of the messages came from
(msnews.microsoft.com) is no longer carrying this newsgroup. Microsoft
has decided to get away from newsgroups and switch to web forums and as
a result they are closing down their news server.
