Default Installation of SP2 Does Not Finish

During the installation of SP2 the install stops before it is finished. The
dialog box "Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard" is open. The text
"Finishing installation" is visible, the task bar indicates the install is
about 50% complete, and in the Details box it says "Running processes after
install."

Task manager shows the install Wizard has a "Running" status. The system
appears to be responsive. For example, the Start button still works.

Any suggestions or comments are appreciated.

Since your machine does not lock, you may need to wait 1/2 an hour or more -
depending on your hardware. Disabele any anti-virus or anything that might
drain your resources.
Search for the SP2 install file - I think it's an XML file. Just search for
*.log or for install.* files created in the last 24 hours in the Windows
directory.

So far the machine has been sitting for about an hour now. CPU usage is
between 5% - 7%. Virus scan and firewall are disabled.

I found two of the three log files I know about - setupapi.log and
scvpack.log. Could not find spuninst.log.

The service pack log file is the most interesting of the two. It shows that
the install stopped at the following point:

c:\winnt\system32\regsvr32.exe /s c:\winnt\system32\inetsrv\iischema.dll

There is no return code for the call, which is why I suspect the install
stopped here. All other return codes for processes starting are 0, except
for one process that returned a value of 1.

At this point I am thinking of restarting the system and hope for the best.

If I understand the question correctly, I believe the answer is no. The
download is coming from Windows Update.

One of the things to try if the installation from the website fails is to
download the stand-alone file and install from it - it sometimes works where
the web page fails.

Hi Rich - As was recommended to you, try doing the install using the 'stand
alone' version. I strongly suggest that you take a look he
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php...5636d83 36717
before you install for some helpful tips.

BITS service should be runing - Background Intelligent Transfer Service,
that is - for WUpdate.
Also, looks like you have IIS service installed and SP2 waits for some
confirmation or SP2 is looking for other machines on the network or SP2
cannot connect to WU site - it should give you a message about that.
As others said, download the Adm. SP2 (about 270MB) from MS site. Before
installing SP2, clean up all unnecessary files (temp., temp internet files
etc), run chkdsk and defrag.

BITS is running and IIS seems to be okay.

I downloaded the standalone SP2 upgrade after wading through a reload of XP
just to get my system working again. For awhile there even my keyboard
stopped working!

Anyway, during my next upgrade try the system hung again and displayed the
same error message about MSDART.DLL. I ended up walking away for about an
hour and much to my amazement the install recovered and successfully
completed.

Thanks for your time and your suggestions.

Jim,

I downloaded the stand alone SP2 upgrade after wading through a reload of XP
just to get my system working again. For awhile there even my keyboard
stopped working! I also followed the suggestions in the link you provided as
well as the suggestions from several other links.

Anyway, during my next upgrade try the system hung again and displayed the
same error message about MSDART.DLL. I ended up walking away for about an
hour and much to my amazement the install recovered and successfully
completed.

Thanks for your time and your suggestions.
