Many do, especially the GTI. Lighter and more nimble.

Not sure of your point exactly as you've deleted all the context for some reason, but newer cars usually have nice features like ABS, power steering, traction control, etc etc.

The only thing I hate about some modern cars is they seem to get smaller inside. Take the newer Ford Mondeos for example, why on earth do they have that ENORMOUS centre console? Nowhere for your knees unless you're a midget. The only thing in the centre console is the radio and some heating controls, there really is no need for it to protrude right back alongside you.

It's not Win 8 or Win 10.

Internet Explorer "come and gone". I like that.

Just because it's now called Edge doesn't mean it's gone. Edge is still here and it still sux. Currently it tells me I have no internet connection, yet every other browser works. WTF? And as per usual with modern fluffy programs that act like a ****ing Apple Mac, all I get is a silly cartoon with a confused looking alien saying no internet. What about some ****ing technical information so I can fix the problem?!?

It is *not* now called Edge. Internet Explorer and Edge are two
different browsers, and *both* of them come with Windows 10.

I'm not a fan of Internet Explorer, but as far as I'm concerned, it's
much better than Edge, which to me is about the worst browser
available.

Agreed & BTW I have had no problem with W10 and I am reeely old. :-)

I have no problems with Windows 10 either (on two machines here). I
like it a lot.

I'm probably older than you (I'm 81), but I've been working with
computers since 1962.

1962? Were those the ones that weighed about 1.5 tonnes?

What's obsolete? Doesn't all software still support
Win7? Of course, you can't use Metro apps,

Does anybody? I've never met a single person who uses Metro in any
way shape or form, it's just some annoying screen we all turn off.

I use Metro. Where I live it's a Taxi company.

I sometimes use Metro. Where I live, it's a free newspaper, (mainly)
distributed in public transport.

I wonder if anyone is called Cortana and if they feel upset by the Windows 10 cartoon.

One of the latter was quite surprised when I printed off an instruction manual for her washing machine and didn't have to pay for it. She couldn't understand how Hotpoint could provide the manual for free. In the end I said it cost me 10p in paper.

I deal with a lot of retired folks that just don't want to
learn anything new. So far I have always been able to help
them, but with M$ playing hard ball with older versions of
Windows, that may change.

All the windows versions look pretty similar to me. So the start menu changes slightly, so what? You can always adjust it to the way you prefer.

I have a few on Fedora and Xfce configured to look like XP.
They can't tell the difference.

Classic Shell is a very good bit of freeware to make any Windows version look exactly like any other Windows version.

"Exactly" is too strong a word. But yes, it can make Windows 10 look a
lot like Windows 7.

I used to use it back when Windows 8 more or less insisted on that mobile phone screen ****. I never noticed a single difference between classic shell and Windows 7.

Classic Shell is a very good choice, but in my opinion, Start 10 is
even better. Start 10 isn't freeware, but it's close enough--$4.99
USD, and it comes with a 30-day free trial.

I refuse to pay for any software on principle.

Somewhere around windows 3.1, I decided that sticking with the ever-changing
windows was futile.
I use as few native apps as possible. My Opera browser works much the
same way it did years ago.

Windows is an operating system.
You choose the best apps for YOUR needs.
If it happens to be a native app, so be it.
Most aren't.

I like Opera, but since it became Chinese I dumped it
I'd rather be hacked by someone who spaeks English.

Everything hacks and spies on you nowadays. Might aswell give up and let them.

Or don't care about it. It's easy to filter any hacks or spies.

The ones I worked on were a lot heavier than that. One of them filled
two floors. Three floors if the air conditioning and cooling was
included.

That's understandable. There seems to be nothing really special about Opera.

There are probably also others that I've never tried that should be on
the list.

Yes. I liked the original (Opera 12.x), when that was the latest.

It had its own shortcomings on rendering.

The later version was a Chromium-clone.

Your experience of those would likely be quite different.

I'm sure it was vastly superior at that time. I didn't know much about

determine if it had any local phone numbers then) and MSIE. AFAIK (in
1995), ****ty performance was a fact of life for the internet.

Nowadays, Opera, Chrome, Firefox, etc all seem to be pretty much as good as each other. The Microsoft browsers are of course, as they always have been, a pile of ****ing ****e.

What do you mean by the bit in brackets?

In 1995 I had a 28.8kbps modem shared between myself and 2 other houses in the street. I had an ethernet cable running along the walls of the gardens (with permission from my lovely next door neighbour) linking to the houses of two friends. We played multiplayer games and they borrowed my "free" internet connection from the University I was studying at. The University wasn't aware of this multiplexing :-) I added some audio cable too, and rigged up a few old taperecorders as amplifiers, so we could speak to each other. This became quite irritating when one of us forgot to switch it off and another would yell down the mic and wake the other two up early in the morning. We used to play tricks on the one who didn't have much computer knowledge, opening the drawer of his CD drive remotely etc.

I once read that biologists gauge monogamy based on

By that standard, they said, humans are among the

But I suppose it's true that society thrives on
monogamy. Now that it's ending we'll have to have
tax-supported child raising. As more single women
buy sperm from alpha, blonde, PhD sperm donors,
we'll all have to fund it.

A related law just recently
passed in MA. 12 weeks family leave for nearly all
employees. Paid for by a payroll tax and a fee charged
to employers. I wonder how many people who were
fighting for that realized that it would simply be
socialized childraising funding and come out of their
own pockets. I'd bet that a lot of them imagined they
were fighting for a new work benefit from their employer,
like a raise.

If you want people to follow your links then you
should explain them. I think I'm not alone in ignoring
links that are not explained. I figure that if people
don't have the time or interest to explain what they're
talking about then there's not much sense in my
researching it.

Even less so when it's described as "the worst thing
online". Why would I want to see the worst thing online?
