Most people disable HTML in news readers because, depending how much of
HTML and the extra stuff that can come along with it is implemented, it
can represent a way malware can get in to your computer, just as an HTML
web page can.

You may be right _in news readers_ - because most people still using
usenet are old codgers like us (-:.

I'm pretty sure you'd be wrong to say "most" for _email_ - I think
there, it'd probably be right to say that most don't even know what HTML
is, let alone that some of their emails come in two versions or how to
switch between them.

Actually, in _news_, is there much HTML still in use? I can't remember
when I last saw a _news_ post with an HTML part.

In these groups, GG's crap are the only ones. My newsreader is
configured to notify that there's a multipart/alternative post (and
strips the alternative (HTML in this case) part), so they're easily
spotted.

In some other groups there are some other loons which post in HTML,
but they're few and far between.

(And there used to be (are?) some dedicated special-purpose groups where
HTML posts are welcomed/recommended/appropriate/whatever.)
