Whatever went wrong, I don't know. But my W10 machine was a disaster.
Many applications did not run.
Second problem: Another pc upgraded with W10 did not run anymore. It

I don't think I will make an effort to upgrade more of my pc's to W10.

Fokke

And there is a third problem. Tried to upgrade our W7 laptop to W10. It
went quite succesful to a percentage of 99 (preparing for the upgrade)
but it stopped there. No 100% and hence no upgrade. This is the third
problem with upgrading my W7 machines.
O yeah. The fourth problem. Our server running W7 Pr 32b could not be
upgraded due to the screen. Don't know why, with a Geforce GT 630 video
card.

OK, and where can I find this driver? I can't find it at the MS site.

I already found it. A W10 ISO image.
But I won't install a fresh copy of W10 on a highly customized machine. It
takes too much effort to tune it again.

Your video card driver is he

x86 http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/105036/en-us
x64 http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/105037/en-us (in
case you upgrade to x64 (probably not))

Not sure if that would help. Maybe if you extracted the file (WinZip, 7Zip,
etc.) to a USB stick or to a CD. Does the installation ask for a driver when
it bogs, or does it just kick you out with an error?

Inspite of the fact that I mentioned earlier that I wouldn't upgrade my
pc's, I was curious to see of using this image would do a better job.
Installing was smooth and in a short time I had W10. Pro, 64b, like my
previous W7 OS.
My desktop was a mess and many applications once again did not run. I
tend to believe that all 32b applications refuse to run of this machine.

So - I gave up and stick to W7.

I have a recent video driver installed. Everything works fine, screen
resolution 1600 x 1200 px.

No, the installation does not even start. It first checks as to whether
the pc is suited for W10. It checks 3 items, these are all OK. But then
there is the message that an update can not take place due to a screen

prefer one thing to another they haven't tried.

Disagree. Although Classic Shell is free, I first purchased Start8 and
Start10. I decided later that Classic Shell is simply better. I prefer
it and not because it's free. I use it on all my machines, even the W7
systems.

I disagree with your view of which is better, but that's fine. We
don't all have to have the same preferences. As I just wrote in a
reply to Char, "we all work in different ways, and have different
likes and dislikes. What's better for me isn't necessarily better for
you, and vice versa."

I know people who prefer the tiles of the Modern interface to the
classic interface of Classic Shell and Start 8/10. I strongly
disagree, but I respect their right to have a preference different
from mine.

Similarly, I know people who prefer Linux or Macintosh to Windows.
Again, I strongly disagree, but I respect their right to have a
preference different from mine.

As far as I'm concerned, $4.99 is close enough to free that it
shouldn't be a consideration for most people in choosing which to use.

So I don't think costs are an issue. For instance, I like Classic Shell
because of the way it works and looks.

It may be a real issue to some people, but it isn't for most. But I
suspect that many people don't even want to try Start 8/10 because
they treat such a small sum as a real issue even if it isn't.

Perhaps you're right. Likely there are many pc users who want to spend
as less as possible.
My point of view is, if you want something, you'll have to pay for it.

Again, I
don't want to recommend that you or anyone else switch to Start 8/10.
To repeat myself again: "So I'm not suggesting that anyone pay the
$4.99 and move to Start 8 or Start10. What I *am* suggesting is that
people do what I did: get the 30-day free trial of Start8 or Start10
and decide for yourself whether you think it's better and worth the
$4.99."

That quotation of course pertains to other people, not to you, who has
already tried both and made his own decision.

Is there some log file you can check, for details ?

Like setupact.log maybe ?

Installs place those files in two places.
The second file is only created and written
to, after the first reboot (i.e. file copying
complete, it is rebooting).

You could swap video cards. Insert an ATI card,
do the install, then deal with NVidia later.
(Put the card back, rely on Basic Display Driver
from Microsoft to take over, until your real
NVidia driver for the GT 630 is installed. Keep
network cable disconnected, if you suspect
Microsoft-provided drivers are still causing
problems.)

Googling shows issues with GT 630 early on,
but I cannot find any current advice for it.
Nothing relevant for 10586.xxx .

Upgrade using media does NOT do the checks like online so old video
driver will work just not well but enough to update to required Win 10

You asked for Windows 10 experience and that is what I gave you. People
normally do whatever they feel like doing but in the end they realise it
is better to start all over again because everything they have done is a
complete and utter mess. That's my experience.

One of my staff tried to upgrade her laptop without telling me and guess
what - she couldn't run it for nearly two weeks and she was so ashamed
of this that she never told anybody about it until one of my other
staffs saw her using her own laptop when she shouldn't. I was surprised
when she started using web-mail instead of company policy of using
Outlook but I never questioned her because I trust them all.

So now you know it.

cut

I think you misread my post.
I didn't ask for a Windows 10 experience, I posted my own experience.
Perhaps after you have sorted it all out, you may find that I had
problems with updating 4 W7 pc's.

Not sure if that would help. Maybe if you extracted the file (WinZip,
7Zip, etc.) to a USB stick or to a CD. Does the installation ask for a
driver when it bogs, or does it just kick you out with an error?

This concerns the problem with the server?
I have a recent video driver installed. Everything works fine, screen
resolution 1600 x 1200 px.

No, the installation does not even start. It first checks as to whether
the pc is suited for W10. It checks 3 items, these are all OK. But then
there is the message that an update can not take place due to a screen
problem. And I have to ask the administrator to find out what it is.
Windows doesn't know yet that I'm the admin.

Fokke

Upgrade using media does NOT do the checks like online so old video
driver will work just not well but enough to update to required Win 10
driver.

I replaced the video card and installed the most recent driver.
This after the first attempt. Did not make any difference with the 2nd
attempt.

Leave the Win 7 driver in place and then upgrade and install Win 10
driver which will not work correctly on 7

O yeah. The fourth problem. Our server running W7 Pr 32b could
not be
upgraded due to the screen. Don't know why, with a Geforce GT 630

card.
So - I will give up upgrading.
No W10 in our house.

the trick there is to d/l the Win 10 driver and use a Win 10 ISO
burned
to CD/DVD for upgradeing. After upgrade update the driver from your
d/l.

OK, and where can I find this driver? I can't find it at the MS
site.

I already found it. A W10 ISO image.
But I won't install a fresh copy of W10 on a highly customized
machine. It takes too much effort to tune it again.

Your video card driver is he

If you install from a recent DVD, it should be
able to install the Basic Display Driver during the
installation. Then you can install a vendor driver
after that.

You could try that, with or without network cable
connected, and see if it makes a difference.

I didn't misunderstand your post; I understood you very well and you
have now confirmed that you had problems updating 4 Win7 machines and
still you want to continue "updating" them when I told you that clean
installation is what you should be doing as I have used it and it worked
100% of the time.

Does this quote remind you of somebody?

doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results

The choice is yours. 29th is not very far now.

On a second thought, Win10 may not be the ideal solution for many of the
posters here.

Thanks.
But I have given up. Four of our 5 machines did not upgrade to W10 properly.
My workstation (was W7 Pro 64b) did not allow 32b applications to run
after being upgraded.
Our laptop (was W7 Pro 64b) did nog go further than 99% of the
preperation, so was never upgraded at all.
Our multimedia pc (was W7 pro 32b) did not start after being upgraded.
And the server (was W7 Pro 32b) couldn't be upgraded due to a screen issue.

I have really given op. Stick to W7.

I have used the W10 iso image as well. With the same results: 32b
appliactions refused to run.

I'll stick to W7.

Yes very good idea. I wanted to tell you this but forgot about it.
Windows 10 is not for everyone on these newsgroups. For some people
they can stay with XP because it ain't broken and does what they want it
to do; some have stupidly gone to use 7 and they should stay with it.

Some of us who have pressing needs, need latest OS and so Windows 10 is
what we have and they work 100% of the time. However, we are a few
endangered species for whom technology is second nature and it comes
naturally.

Good luck.

Microsoft made some promises, during the Preview era.
That they would use feedback from the installs, to
"coax" installs into the machines. Even if GWX did
not grant you an install on the first day, it would
happen eventually, because the telemetry would
tell them what to fix.

During the Preview era, drivers were pretty good. I
can only assume that during that time, Windows 8.1
drivers were being used.

When the actual release came along, the drivers
fell apart. I had around 20 items in Device Manager
with no driver. I waited two months - no patch
fixed my Device Manager. I fixed it myself. I
also tracked down the one and only ATI Crimson
driver (which wasn't supposed to work for my
card, but it did), so I could have a video
driver that no longer throws errors on every boot.

So the grand promise, didn't actually happen.
The thing was a rickety mess, when shipped.
Somehow, the transition from the Preview
era (things worked good) to Release, things
went to hell. Take a look at Optimus users,
as the pinnacle of torture (that's the laptops
with two GPUs, where a low power or high power
GPU is used on demand). That's the kind of driver
that would need to be tested months in advance
(i.e. during the Preview Era, not during
six months of Release).

If a few people are ****ed off at the lack of
careful integration, this should not come as
a surprise. You have to be pretty motivated
to solve some of these problems - such as a
Start menu that doesn't work on a *clean*
install. What excuse can one make for that ?
Didn't they catch that in testing ? And why
was the response to that issue, so (silent and)
slow ?

Yes, I blame the users. It's all their fault.

Paul
