There are only a few people who realize that they were two different things. then switched to Performa 475, then Pentium I and from then on I stayed with Windows. Unlike my older brother (42yo) and sister (41yo) and don't have a single LP or single. My first CD ever was 'Violator' by Depeche Mode and it still works! That's /my/ generation. Having never heard of "Violator" nor "Depeche Mode," it's clearly not *my* generation. I have several hundred LPs, almost all of Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, and Romantic period music. |

Kind of like an Elephant burial ground. BTW, I am an old guy too. It's not so much an "elephant burial ground" as it is that many of us "old guys" are so old that we've been in the computer field for a long time, and are therefore here because we know enough about computers that we are often able to help others. For example, I'm 77, and I started working with computers professionally in 1962. Speaking as a late bloomer I guess, 59 this yr. I started with WinME. Never had much problem with it.. Toasted more than one xp machine just seeing how far I could push it. Beta tester for Vista, no problems with that either but had the horsepower to run it. Loved win7 and still run it on some machines. Hated 8.0 but built a new i7 with 16gigs of ram and a good graphics card, installed win 8.1 with start8 after reading the so called old guy advice. I have always had the utmost respect for all your experiences and help you have given me over the years. I for one hope you guys are here for a long time yet. Just to help us rookies! |

After all, if all that you want is the anti-virus, you're free to install that alone. In my case, I like the anti-virus, the firewall and the vulnerability scanner (which lets me know if some of my programs have updates available) which is why they are the only ones I install. Slimer, Mcafee is not only NOT free (maybe to you, but not to the rest of us), it is also one of the worst products available in the field. It seems you are not only a USENET newbie but also a greenhorn when it comes to anti-virus programs. We get it, you figured out how to work it. That does NOT make it a good anti-virus program. It is crap. Live with it. |

I'm looking for a new FREE antivirus program. I've been using AVG. I recently installed it on a new machine and all was going well until I tried installing a program called aTube Catcher, which lets you download and save YouTube videos. I have aTube Catcher on one machine and it works fine. I try installing it on a new machine and AVG keeps finding a file and stopping me from installing the program. I looked it up online and there are quite a few complaints, all pointing at AVG. I've also noticed on the new machine, AVG is finding fault with downloads of other programs I have been using on the old machine. AVG just seems to have gotten very choosy lately, so I'm wondering if there's another goor freebie out there. Thanks. You say free so why not uninstall AVG and re-activate Windows Defender? It is already on your windows 8/8.1 machine and all it needs is to re-activate it and then download all the updates since it was last updated. In most cases you will need to go to Windows update and select all Windows Defender updates and download them. IMHO, it is time to get a paid subscription to either McAfee and/or Symantec Endpoint protection. I have used McAfee before and now I am using Symantec Endpoint because I get both free of charge because I buy corporate license and so Home use becomes free for employees. Good luck. I vouch for Mcafee. I get it free with my ISP and frankly, I feel very secure with it installed. Windows Defender isn't good enough to be anything but very basic protection. Mcafee? I don't use any products that come as PUP's. Mcafee is close to being malware. Anything but Mcafee! There is absolutely nothing wrong with McAfee OR Norton. People that continue to say that haven't used either program in the past 2 years or so. Forget and forgive? "There is nothing wrong with dictatorship. People who continue to say dictatorships are bad have not tried it in the last 2 years or so". What a moronic sentiment. I agree, you have a moronic sentiment towards McAfee. |
