upgrading to Windows 8 is probably not worthwhile"

That's probably consistent with MSFT's position since it would seem that one of the primary objectives at this stage is to not move
every existing pc to Windows 8.

Why ?
With Win7 retail and OEM availability for at least one and two years respectively a more obvious (defined or not) preferred
objective would be get everyone off XP (and Vista).

I think you are spot on there. I doubt Microsoft can be stupid enough to
think that business customers will ever use Windows 8, but by putting it
there it makes it clear to them that Windows 7 is the only way to go, so
they will no longer delay moving from XP. Microsoft will pick up some of
the tablet/phone market with Windows 8 (not much, it's not that good)
which they would otherwise have lost entirely. Having got the enterprise
customers to Windows 7, it should be easier to move them to Windows 9
(if it's any good) - but either way, as you say, Microsoft can forget XP
for ever.

Failure is not an option - it comes bundled with your Microsoft product.

yup, that makes a lot of sense. Which is why I just happily nuked the
Win 8 partition off this machine. It probably wasn't going to work
anymore anyways, since its been released and that was the CP version
from a few months back. It was annoying. Quite happy with Windows 7...
guess I will wait for Windows 9, unless, that too, has the same nonsense
interface.

You're right about upgrading from Windows 7, but you may as well get
used to the interface changes.

Microsoft is playing defense. Ultraportable computers are rampant.
Apple's revenue on the iPhone alone is as much as all of Microsoft's
revenue. Contrary to silly predictions, the desktop personal
computer is here to stay. But, the masses might not require a full
sized PC. The iPhone probably satisfied lots of pent up desire for a
personal computing device, for people who didn't want a desktop
computer. And Microsoft is probably under pressure by Ultraportable
personal computer operating system makers, that could easily port
their operating systems to a full size desktop computer.

Perhaps Microsoft should be concentrating on empowering desktop
users. For example, speech control. Many people probably do not
understand that concept either, but speech operation of personal
computing devices is only a matter of time (I do it, already).
Naturally a desktop computer can handle speech more easily than an
ultra portable PC, but Microsoft is lazy. Encouraged by competition,
there's a distinct likelihood that speech control and other OS
innovations will come bass ackwards through ultraportable devices to
the desktop PC. Should that happen, our courts could reap gobs of
money from Microsoft trying to fight them off.

Nope - it's a Microsoft problem.

It could choose to use a real USENET client.
