Turn off metro

I am currently using Win8 Developer Preview and have Metro disabled

by setting this key to "0"
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer
RPEnabled

I just talked to someone using the "real" version of Win8 and they
claimed there is no such key.

I want to know if I get the "real" version of Win8 if Metro can be disabled.

To me it looks like Win8 without Metro is essentially identical to Win7
but with somewhat better performance.

I just checked here. There's no such key.

I don't know if it can be disabled, but why should you care? Even if
it's not disabled there's no need to use it you don't want to. I very
seldom do.

The key does not exist, and creating a DWORD key set to 0 does not
disable Metro on my test system running the time-limited Enterprise
eval version.

Loading the Modern UI (fka Metro) is hard-coded (not registry based)
Even supplemental or third party apps scheduled by task or startup are processed after the Modern UI.

Well, it may not remove Metro
but as long as it's disabled that's fine with me.

I am currently using W8dp without Metro and it's virtually identical to
Win7...I actually like it.
It seems a bit better on resources than Win7

In time a lot more (tweaks) will arrive. Windows has always been one of the most tweaked o/s.
And also subject to Microsoft updating files that tweaker applications use and breaking those tweaks necessitating updates from the
3rd party app....unfortunately not all 3rd party applications survive for the duration of an o/s lifecycle.

Only now am I getting Win7 machines in...so it will be a while before I
start seeing Win8.

For anyone not using a tablet or touch screen,
Win8 without Metro looks like a good alternative to Win7.

Same here...and it's the developer preview which will expire soon.

Most of the machines I work on are still XP...

only recently have I been getting Win7 machines

Switch to the Enterprise Evaluation version - 90 day trial period, but
you can reinstall as many times as you like (and there may be ways to
extend the eval period, I haven't looked yet.)

Basically I just wanted to see what Win8 was all about. I do not plan to
actually use it..so when it expires I'll just let it.

I am in no rush to do things...it took me until yesterday to update my
main machine (which runs Linux w/ PAE kernel)

I removed the HD from my ten year old machine and popped it on one only
five years old!


The old machine was a dual core XP3800 with 4 gigs of DDR1 400mhz (the
case is a Gateway P-1 tower)

the new machine....a dual core XP6000 with 4 gigs of DDR2 800mhz (The
case is a CIC system P-II tower)

A real nice difference in performance...more than likely due mostly to
the faster RAM
