I have a Toshiba Laptop with 8G Ram. This computer originally came
with Win 7 and I did the $14.99 upgrade to Win 8. When doing a
Re-start the computer will hangup after the shutdown. I have to hit
the power button to shut it down, then hit it again to complete the
restart.
In trying to solve the problem I have checked the BIOS (That seems to
have been replaced with something new) and can find no conflicts. I
just reloaded Win8 yesterday using the ISO disk I made with the
update. Same problem. (That gave me another problem. I'll start a
different thread)

Anybody have any ideas on where to look? I'm considering reloading
Win7 and start totally over. But that is not very attractive.

Then I updated and all hell broke loose. Did your problem start before
updates or after?

I can't say that I noticed before the upgrade. So the problems must
have occurred after the upgrade.

And what trips mine is either going to Standby or
Hibernation. It may or may not work. Although later shutdown won't work
(you get the blue screen saying shutdown stuck forever) and the WiFih
driver becomes missing. Which I have to uninstall and reinstall to get
working again.

My fix so far is not to use Standby or Hibernation. Which is a terrible
idea for a tablet. Thank goodness I buy machines in pairs and the other
one still has Windows 7 and that works fine. In your case besides the
help you got so far, I would check the event logs.

Your problems are more severe than mine. But I don't use Standby or
Hibernation, so maybe I might have the problem there. I just don't know.

Since the re-start worked from Safe Mode I will probably try cutting out
one by one the Services items in MSCONFIG. I'm not looking forward to
that so I'm procrastinating in case an 'Eureka' moment is posted. I am
operation as it is. But I just shouldn't have the problem.

One suggestion is to use the freeware CCleaner program to temporarily
disable the stuff in the startup section. It is found in the Tools,
Startup tab.an

For the first run I'd disable everything there and see if the power down in
works properly, then turn on a couple at a time until you find out what
is causing the problem, provided this is an actual startup type problem.

I find using CCleaner easier to use rather than MSCONFIG for this but
then again I also use the CCleaner program to clear out the temporary
stuff that builds up over time.

CCleaner can be found at http://www.piriwiform.com/ccleaner

Thanks for the suggestion, but Startup only has a few items like the
intellipoint for the mouse, etc. I think the problem is in the Services
section. I've tried a few things without success. I'll probably just
live with the aggravation.

Sorry, no - though I have been to Silver Spring MD, and likely as not
signed on to that BBS, that must have been a different two-headed alien
megalomaniac.

No apology necessary, and Happy New Year to you as well!

That is what you get for picking such a pedestrian name. You
need something unique.

Happy New Year.

Interestingly, I only (relatively) recently adopted this handle, in
large part because my previous appellation (although much more unique)
implied certain things about me that were at best a stretch and at
worst a complete misrepresentation. I found this one to be a bit more
comfortable to wear, as it were.
