W8 windows aren't just ugly, they're warped
I just noticed something very odd about my windows. The upper right
hand corner buttons (minimize, restore, and close) are set in the wrong place when the window is normal (visible but not maximized). Those three buttons should be within the window border when the window is not maximized. As it is, they touch the outline of the window. That's just sloppy, really sloppy. And various errors are happening when I'm trying to work with the appearance of the GUI. I wonder what Microsoft programmers are doing besides raking in their monopoly money. Actually, it's like more of the status quo, but still amazing that it can be that bad. |

I shouldn't just blame it on the programmers since it's probably more
management's fault. |

Perhaps you could provide a Windows 7 screenshot that shows a substantial/wide window border, with those three buttons interrupting the Window border instead of being where they are supposed to be inside of that border. This is amusing. That junk certainly wasn't the case until at least after Windows XP. Regardless of when it happened after Windows XP, it looks horrible and it gets in the way of window resizing. Why on Earth did Microsoft put those buttons touching the window outline instead of putting them inside of the border, so that the window can be resized in that area as well as in any other area? You might notice that underneath those buttons is blank space... -- unless you're using a program that has its own skin and not the standard Windows skin. I don't know. Resizing the window using the border on that area will be difficuly as you'll likely to click on either the Minimize, Maximize/Restore or the Close button accidentally. But the up-right corner still has enough gap for resizing the window. Those button placement may not be the best one, but it dosn't make the buttons looks out of place either. AFAIK, they're like the Vista buttons on Aero mode. |

They don't fill up to the edge, they were moved up to the edge. If they were enlarged, it might make some sense, even though it would still be odd. Easier access to windowing control buttons since they would be too small on higher resolution screen. The buttons do get a bit larger compared to non Aero UI. as you'll likely to click on either the Minimize, Maximize/Restore or the Close button accidentally. Apparently, there is no border whatsoever. Visually, no. But it's still there. If the window is resizeable, the mouse cursor will change as it hover on the very edge of the window on those buttons upper area. But the up-right corner still has enough gap for resizing the window. Yeah, I guess... Regardless, the gap on the corner is still a bit too small, at least for me. Always had to be careful when reszing from upper right. Even on 1024x768 screen. |

The approach is the same on Vista/Win7. The icons (min, max, close) touch the window outline - i.e. no space above and moved up to the border vs. XP Also consistent to a certain extent across Vista/Win7/Win8 - each icon has a pronounced color change/highlight when selected While it may present difficulty for some to adapt the same border touching approach has been the same for at least 6 yrs. Vista - http://blog.paulgu.com/windows/windo...late-in-vista/ - Win7 is the same as Vista The extra space between the icons and the window border (in XP) serves about the same purpose as the space below it in XP and all later o/s - the ability to incorrectly click on something directly below it...but after use and adaption - basically nothing. -- ....winston msft mvp |
