Registry pokes allow you to make the border padding thicker/thinner,
other than that all the same registry values that worked all the way
back to win3.x for fonts and colours, now seem to be ignored.

Have they removed the Win7 desktop options?
Right click desktop; Personalise, Window Colour, Advanced Appearance
Settings; tinker to your heart's content.

Yep.

There's exactly one colour/transparency you can adjust, it applies to
the taskbar and the active window title bar, everything else is fixed,
if your chosen colour tends to towards black, good luck reading the
active window title.

Wondering how they got the upper right-hand buttons (minimize,
restore, close) to fit within the window border. That says
"Windows 8 release preview". Can anybody do that with the retail
version?

I'm not in front of a Win8 box right now, but I only saw font/size
options in there ... not colours.

That is the Display page. There are a few foreground (font) and
background color adjustments in the Appearance page.
