WIndows 8.1 upgrade stops computer
It happened again this morning. I turned on the computer, and tried to
access the internet with Firefox. FF error out and wanted to be reset. As usual I rebooted the Windows 8.1 computer, and FF started and work perfectly. I then tried to access my email and newsgroups with Thunderbird. TB worked for a while then appeared to lock up, I rebooted the computer, and that allowed me to access thunderbird, but it would not work. I rebooted again and I got a message that there was a Windows 8.1 update. The update was a couple of MB that took 5 minutes to download. The connection normally runs at 3mb. After the update was complete, I rebooted the computer even though it did not say it was needed and now the computer is working. Why does Windows 8.1 upgrade need to interfere with the computer operation until the upgrade is installed |

Some of the wireless drivers can cause the problems you mentioned. I suspect that the drivers in question are sensitive to a change between win 7 and 8. Has to do with buss resets and USB. |

Why does Windows 8.1 upgrade need to interfere with the computer operation until the upgrade is installed Since you are having repeated problems with the Windows upgrade process while others of us have experienced no such difficulties, it may be a good idea to take a closer look at your computer. It seems to me that it may not be completely compatible with Win8.1. -- best regards, Neil |

That's the only difference I noticed between my win 7 and win 8 desktop behavior during the update process. Admittedly, it may be win 8 AMD support chip drivers. The win 8 machine was shutting down the Wi-FI connection to the router, then bringing it back up, but windows did not reconnect to the USB / wi fi adapter. The status led indicates that it's up. A reboot, or removing and re-inserting the adapter into the USB socket makes the problem go away. The number of observable USB Buss resets is greater with Win 8 than 7 and 8.1 ??? |
