Windows never supported a USB installation, did they change something?

I've reloaded my windows 8.1 from a USB, so I can say it's available in
8.
Never tried 7, but why wouldn't any boot device work?

The OP said that he /installed/ Windows on a USB drive...he did not say
"installed from"

Yes I see where you're coming from. My bad. He installed 10 on a USB.
Just reading too fast and not processing right.

I do stuff like that all the time, no big deal.

So I wonder if anyone knows when Windows started supporting an
installation on a USB drive...
My /guess/ is that it does not...but in this case it worked because the
boot partition was on the internal drive
