Default Latency

I'm not sure you're answering my question. I'm trying to set up for
two-way Skype conversations.

With a microphone and earphones hooked up, there are two problems. One
is an audible delay between what I say and what I hear. Correctly or
incorrectly, I am calling that delay "latency." The second problem is
repetition of the delayed sound something like an echo.

The question is how, set up for a two-way conversation, can I eliminate
both problems?

Well, I think that is a different problem and I do quite a bit of
Skyping.

Skype does introduce a delay, so that is normal. You often find you are
talking over the other person, but you get used to it.

The person I Skype with most is using Linux, so I don't know his
settings. What I do know is that we had to sort out settings so that we
could both use inbuilt microphone and speakers. He sometimes uses a
desktop. I always use one of two laptops, one W7, the other W10.

My settings on the machine with Realtek on board sound are as follows:

Realtek HD Audio Manager (this appears separately in Control Panel W7)

Speakers: Stereo
Fader a bit below halfway across
Sound Effects None
Default Format 16 bits 44.1kHz

Microphone: Fader about 50%, Mute On, Boost 20%, Noise suppression and
Echo cancellation both off.

In Windows 7 Control Panel

Playback Speakers Properties:
Levels HD Audio Output 34, Microphone faded down and muted
Enhancements: Disable all sound effects

(NB If there is a scroll bar in the sound effects, untick Disable and
scroll down to make sure all are individually unticked, then tick
Disable again. This was a bug in W7 on some machines)

Advanced : 16bit 44100Hz, Tick Allow applications to take control and
Give Exclusive mode priority.

Recording: Listen to this device unticked
Levels: Microphone 50% little speaker beside it red muted sign, Mic
boost 20%
Enhancements: Disable all sound effects unticked, DCOffset Cancellation
ticked, noise suppression and echo cancellation unticked, Immediate Mode
ticked
Advanced: 2 channel 16bit 44100Hz Allow applications to take exclusive
control and Give exclusive mode both ticked.

I hope some of this makes some sort of sense. It's very late here.

VLC ain't going to help with that.

Did you ever come up with a workaround?
