Default Despise the revolving ball, how to change?

Hi All,

The revolving ball "please wait" drives me nuts. Is
the a way to configure something less obnoxious?

Many thanks,
-T

Because you've been calling the machine names,
Cortana heard that, and inserted "wait states".
She knows who you are, Mr.Todd.

Now, exactly what kind of a response would
you like instead ? Dead silence with no
progress indicator at all ? If you think
you're going to "accelerate" some process
as if by magic, think again. If the
architecture is lethargic, it will remain
lethargic.

If the operation is disk limited, buy an SSD.

Some of the responses are controlled by timer
settings in the Registry. But "striking the OS
deaf and dumb", there doesn't seem to be much
point to that, as you're still going to be annoyed
in the end (long long wait, no feedback).

When Win10 takes a snooze here, I head out to the
kitchen. Then I cannot see the antics. And I remain
very calm.

That why when Cortana ask me who I was, I said,
"Paul". It then preceded to call you a name
in French. I think it had something to do
with, oh, it is too rude to repeat. And I am
"reasonably" certain your mother is not related
to a, well I'd better stop here. It was just a
machine responding to being called obnoxious.
Machines don't have feelings do they?

I would settle for an "Hour Glass"

There is an optical illusion with revolving balls
that causes the colors to change depending on how you
look at it. The obnoxious balls M$ uses something
similar. Both make me a bit headachy and nauseous,
I think is is the same thing as car sickness.

Won't it be interesting if we find Cortana is really a
call center in India with a bunch of underpaid
M$ employees running Google search for you (bing
being to inaccurate). :-)

The Microsoft back end seems to be cobbled together
via acquisitions from small companies. There are actually
other companies, not listed in the Wiki article on Cortana.

Technology

The natural language processing capabilities of Cortana
are derived from Tellme Networks (bought by Microsoft in 2007)
and are coupled with a Semantic search database called Satoru.

Computing power for Cortana is provided by Microsoft's extensive
cloud computing resources that also power Microsoft Azure.

So no sign of a Watson back end, yet. I think it
would be fun if your desktop could play Jeopardy
and get the answers before the participants could.

I would settle for an "Hour Glass"

Control Panel - Mouse - Pointers (tab)

Choose "Windows Standard." It looks like they did away with the windows
standard "regular" size, so you may have to put up with larger pointers,
but that will present you with an unanimated hourglass.

I'm pretty sure you can find a pointer set on-line that will please you
and set up your own custom cursor set. They probably have the Windows
Standard cursors available somewhere. Then you can save that set, and use
it whenever you like.

Everything but the obnoxious revolving ball. Thank you any way!

It's not the ball...it's your attitude. Think of it as hypnotic
and soothing. Or maybe an opportunity to take a 20 second nap.
Most of life's little annoyances just fade away if you will just let them.

I have a friend in another state who just upgraded from xp to win7.
He calls me every day to bitch about some trivial change in the system
UI and expects me to "make it right" for him.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell him...
If the revolving ball is the worst thing you have to bitch about,
you live a truly charmed life. There are almost 7 Billion people on Earth
who would love to trade problems with you. :-)

Now, if you want to bitch about what's happening behind that revolving
ball, like unwanted upgrades at inopportune times, I'll help you bitch.

The obnoxious ball actually makes me slightly nauseous and give
me a bit of a headache, probably because of its similarity
to the above mentioned optical illusion.
