Default Windows Live [Essentials] Mail on Windows 10

Just got told by Microsoft's Outlook eMail that to keep running Windows
Live Mail (2012) I had to download and install a patch "because we are
going to being making some changes in the next few weeks..." They also
recommend Windows 10 indigenous new mail app.

The patch was only about 1MB. I downloaded it and applied it.
It is now "Windows Live Mail 2012, Version 2012, (Build 16.4.3563.0918).

The first couple of times I launched WLM, I got a system squawk dialog that
said "problem, must shut down" [only WLM]... and BAP! It would dissolve
into the Windows wallpaper. Then I would relaunch it... Same thing... I
rebooted... This time the system squawk said it was having problems
accessing my calendar... but it said "We will try to resolve these issues"
and BAP! It would dissapate into the Windows wallpaper...

Today, it launched and everything worked just fine.

D'uh. I don't know what Microsoft did, but they seem to have fixed it.

HTH.

I got the same message. I'm using Hotmail which is now called Outlook.
I'm hoping whatever they intend, it doesn't mess up my Hotmail account
since I'm using it on Linux and Android as well as the wife's laptop
running windows 7. There seems to be a redundancy of mail programs in
windows and I can't be sure exactly which program they are talking about,
but I hope none of this makes the program inoperable on other platforms.

Microsoft has specifically stated that It won't be supported. however,
if you are using it to access other email accounts other than
Microsoft's own branded then it won't matter, unless, of course, they
too decide to upgrade their technologies!!

Also, I understand it you reconfigure the settings to use IMAP or Pop3
then it might work. I tried to configure one of my newer accounts
"Preview" versions in Thunderbird using IMAP and it worked!!!!!!!
Please note I don't use WLM in my Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 machines so
I don't know anything about it. However, my Windows 7 machine does use
WLM 2012 but I haven't applied any patches yet. When it stops working,
I will move them to Outlook 2013 and/or OL 2016. I have all OL versions
since 2003 but only 2010, 2013 and 2016 is used extensively.

Windows Live Essentials 2009 and 2011 are not supported any more, and
you will need to update to Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10 and use the Mail
app, or use _www.outlook.com_.

If you are using IMAP or POP3 then there is no problem; Therefore, if
you are using any of the nix versions then you should be alright because
that is the only thing (IMAP and POP3) you can use on them. Also, WLM
can be used to access GMAIL or AOL or YAHOO emails. Alternatively,
people can use TB to use IMAP and/OR POP3 connections.

Same here, but only for news. I use MS Office Outlook 2003 for my ISP mail
and Gmail.

Not entirely true.
Once the account is migrated to the Office 365 platform POP3 will not
function until the end-user logs on to the MSFT account at Outlook.com
and toggles the use POP option.
- i.e. it doesn't matter which client is being used (or Windows or
Linux or iOS o/s) when using POP3 - that POP enable box needs to be 'On'.

The notice needs to be read in the frame of reference in which it was
written as applicable to Win7/8x/10.

2009 isn't supported since it was for XP which is past its lifecycle
2011 is for Vista thus in the above frame of reference not supported for
7/8x/10

2009 and 2011 are not supported because there is no patch replacing
DeltaSynce with EAS. Only WLM12 gets the patch.
- thus it would be incorrect to state a need to update to 8x/10, 10
Mail app, or outlook.com.

Bottom line...this notice is about DeltaSync being replaced with EAS due
to backend server and account migration to the Office 365 platform which
does not support DeltaSync)
- IMAP for Outlook.com accounts are not impacted. POP3 accounts should
use the newer pop3/smtp servers and once migrated enable POP in the web
UI. After account migration DeltaSync users in WLM12 need to install the
patch and Outlook 07 through 2010 users need to remove the Outlook
Connector and remove/resetup the account.

First the message means your account is being migrated from the old
backend server to the Office 365 server.

For WLM:
That patch replaces the DeltaSync server with the EAS server in WLM's
built in code.
- it does not update or change what one sees using the Http/DeltaSync
protocol in the Outlook.com type email account's properties - that
server field hasn't been relevant for years since the server is
built-in-code in WLM's mail engine.

Thus if you are using DeltaSync for an Outlook.com type
account(Outlook/Live/Hotmail/MSn.com) the patch is necessary for EAS
functionality *****after the account is migrated**** to the Office 365
platform that supports EAS but not DeltaSync.
- it would also be appropriate after account migration to remove the
DeltaSync configured email account and let WLM set it up automatically
using the EAS server and rebuild the EAS folder structure - Messages
saved to the account's Drafts folder will be available in WLM's Storage
folders/Drafts subfolder (i.e. an EAS account in WLM doesn't have a
local Drafts folder).

If one is using IMAP for the Outlook.com type account the patch just
updates shared files that WLM uses for all 3 protocols(POP3/IMAP/EAS)

If one is using POP3 for Outlook.com type accounts it would be wise to
change the servers from pop3.live.com/smtp.live.com to
pop-mail.outlook.com/smtp-mail.outlook.com now or after the account is
migrated to the Office 365 platform. Additionally after the account is
migrated to the Office 365 platform send and receive using POP3 will
**not* function with any of the above servers producing a timeout and
error....to correct, logon to the account at Outlook.com, access
Settings, and enable the option to use POP.

If using a Microsoft account to sign on to Microsoft (formerly Live)
services in WLM to sync contacts and calendar in WLM (or Office 2003)
then after the account is migrated sync will cease to function for
contacts and calendars. The Office 365 platform only supports Contact
and Calendar sync in Outlook 2007/2010/2013/2016 or Win 8x/10 Mail app
or the emclient(http://www.emclient.com/)

Other changes will be necessary if using Outlook 2007/10.
