Lost classic start menu after latest windows 10 update
Windows 10 proudly announced this morning that it had updated my PC.
It seems two immediate consequences are 1. The lost of my Classic Start Menu, which for the moment I can no longer find how to re-install. 2. The loss of the 'theme' I was using after much experiment months ago. My blue title bars have become black. Before I get stuck into resolving these, has anyone already done so and able to give me a quick summary please. And is this folder I've just found C:\Windows.old\Program Files another consequence of this update? -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

And is this folder I've just found C:\Windows.old\Program Files another consequence of this update? OK, sorted thanks #1. I downloaded latest version 4.3.0 and re-installed. Haven't thoroughly checked but looks OK at a glance. #2 Proved trivial once I got my brain in gear: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalisation and choose. Maybe my query about C:\Windows.old\Program Files is unrelated? -- Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

Did the same to me yesterday, I now have a permanent Recently Added and an alphabetical list of programs plus a tiny log on photo. I suppose I'll get used to it but it's a bit annoying when I allegedly have things set up to warn me of updates. Mike -- Michael Swift We do not regard Englishmen as foreigners. It is perfectly simple to get rid of Windows.old. All you have to do is run Disk Cleanup. This has always been true, including with the Insider Program. The Anniversary Update installs like a Windows version upgrade, and saves your previous "version" of Windows in C:\Windows.old. and, apparently, overwrites ANY preferences that you've configured "other than Micro-shaft's way" with "THEIR way" [or the highway], including the use of a REASONABLE shell (i.e. NOT the 'start thing' with built-in advertising). with so FEW preferences remaining, you'd think they could just LEAVE! C:\Windows.old\ contains files from your previous "version" of Windows. and probably is a pain in the ass to get rid of No. Use "cleanmgr.exe" which is also known as Disk Cleanup. Click the system files button, rescan. The Windows.old entry will show as the 10GB to 20GB of files. Cleanmgr will take care of the permissions while removing that. ******* In Cleanmgr, be careful when selecting a "cleanup of Windows Update" materials, as sometimes that involves NTFS compression of portions of WinSXS, which can stretch on for a while. You can click "Cancel" of course, if you get bored. Programmatically, this option should only have been invoked on machines with 32GB MMC storage, as they really need compression where ever it makes sense. Compressing the contents of C: on ordinary hard drives or even modern SSDs, is a waste of electricity (NTFS compression is ****-poor at the best of times). I first noticed this, when changes to cleanmgr were backported to Windows 8.1, and it spent three hours compressing files in WinSXS. There was some tool I could use, which displays attribute fields, and I could detect "compressed" that way. I had to write a script to filter the results and make sense of it. Good fun. ******* The contents of "C:\Windows.old\Program Files" warns you about untoward changes to your system. So you would want to have a look inside there, and compare to the current C:\Program Files or whatever. Paul |

Lost classic start menu after latest windows 10 update
I'm running Avast 12.3.3154.6 on my Windows 10 1607 X64 box, which I
believe is the latest version of Avast, and I don't have this problem at all. I'm not sure why you are experiencing this. Avast doesn't wake my machine up all the time, and it doesn't have insomnia. Did you try using their extensive uninstall program? https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility Then do a reinstall? That might undo whatever has happened to your systems. -- Zag No one ever said on their deathbed, 'Gee, I wish I had spent more time alone with my computer.' ~Dan(i) Bunten |
