Yes, but leaving the partition full of bits and bytes may prevent moths from getting in..... I can always fill it with Linux builds. I downloaded and installed EasyBCD. Pretty neat, but I have a question. If I uninstall it will the native Windows 7 boot stuff be restored? It only alters the boot manager. There's no need to uninstall EasyBCD. I understand that there is no need to uninstall it, but what I want to, anyway? Will it restore the original Windows MBR/GPT without doing a repair with the Windows install disk or repair disk? -- Crash "The fewer the facts, the stronger the opinion." ~ Arnold H. Glasow ~ |

"Dave \"Crash\" Dummy" wrote: I have been putting off installing Win8 RTM on my Win7 machine in a dual boot configuration because I wasn't sure about getting rid of the dual boot after I removed Win8. Can you run that by me? Easy, I install 'experimental' OSs on a separate partition or on a separate HD. To remove it, I just format the partition or HD where it's installed and it's gone! Now all that's left is to fix the boot menu to remove the unwanted entry, here's two ways to do it: 1. Open a command prompt as administrator and type BCDEDIT to see your boot loader, type BCDEDIT /? for a list of commands that will tell you how to fix/change things or do it the easy way: 2. Download EasyBCD: http://download.cnet.com/EasyBCD/300...-10556865.html Run it to install it and then run it and follow the prompts to remove the entry for the unwanted OS. It's pretty self explanatory! NOTE: One thing you can do is NOT remove the OS and NOT remove the entry from the boot menu but in the Edit tab check the desired OS and check the "Skip the boot menu" box. That leaves the 2nd OS in place but you'll never know it until you re-run EasyBCD and uncheck the box. I wonder. . . I have Win8 installed on a spare drive, and Win7 on the only drive in my laptop. It has space for a second drive (I used slot that to clone my primary shortly after purchasing it). If I installed EasyBCD on the WIn7 drive, then put the Win8 drive in and booted to the primary Win7 drive, do you think I could add the Win8 drive as a boot option? I've used EasyBCD before, but never on something like this. Might be worth a try (after I image my primary). Nah, didn't work. ASA it boots (even before I ran EasyBCD), Win7 wants to run chkdsk on the Win8 drive (I didn't let it run). Then, when I added the Win8 drive to the boot menu, I can select it, but it won't boot. It wants me to put the Win8 DVD in so it can make repairs. If I was sure it wouldn't affect the Win7 drive, I'd give it a try. Maybe later on this evening when I've got time to do it, I'll give it a try and see what happens. Worse comes to worst, I'll just pull that drive out and re-image my Win7 drive (if it gets messed up). -- SC Tom |

Remember, it's not replacing or uninstalling or installing anything, it's just a visual shell to let you use BCDedit more easily. Imagine you ran BCDedit w/o EasyBCD. You manually modify the boot manager, it remains modified until you modifiy it again. -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://twovoyagers.com/improve-usenet.org/ |

"Rene Lamontagne" wrote in message ... I have been using Classic Shell for a while in Win 8 and like it very much, Now I see there is another similar utility out there called Retro UI. Has anyone tried it yet? Is it as good or better than classic shell ? I am not able to try it now as I cleaned out my trial Win 8 RTM. I realize I am asking this a little too soon and may get better responses in a couple weeks, Thanks in advance for any answers anyway. Regards, Rene I've been trying out another start menu approach, this one runs Windows 7 explorer.exe in Win8. So far it looks pretty good. You can easily switch between Win7 and Win8 explorers. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1573...for-windows-8/ |

I saw your post here, and another by Andre in the Technet forums, and decided to give it a try, and I'll probably keep it (if I keep Windows 8). Since I dislike the Win8 Game scenario, I also brought in a couple of the Win7 ones (Solitaire and Free Cell) using the method described he http://www.howtogeek.com/122145/what...-in-windows-8/ If I do much more to it, it'll just be another instance of Win7, so why bother? I've seen a few posts about how much faster Win8 boots than Win7, but I have to disagree. I have Win7 HP 64-bit on one drive, and Win8 Pro 64-bit on another identical drive in my laptop, and I choose what I want to run from the boot menu (no dual boot). Booting to the Win7 is noticeably faster than booting to Win8, even before doing and customization. There may be better memory usage in Win8 than Win7 (I read that somewhere), but I have never run out of memory on either of my Win7 64-bit or 32-bit machines, so that's not a plus for me. I figured, what the heck, for $15 I'll give Win8 a try. Whether or not I'll keep it, I haven't decided yet. -- SC Tom |

The author of that Start menu fix has now written a new method without using Win7 files. I think it's even better, you can switch between desktop and Metro via the mouse-wheel! It's at the beta stage and free at the moment but he will be charging a small fee as it matures. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/1586...s-back-beta-3/ |

With right-drag, I don't have to remember. Feel free to forget the following :-) If it's to the same partition, without control it's move and with control it's copy. If it's to another partition, it's the reverse. It seems that Microsoft thinks you normally want to move a file when you're dragging it within your partition, whereas you normally want to copy a file when you're dragging it between partitions. I have the advantage of remembering that, but in truth, I don't like it very much. Before I forget: on my W7 system, when I am dragging a file, there is an icon on the mouse cursor that shows whether the OS plans to move the file or to copy it. I try to remember to look at that icon before releasing the mouse button. Note that you can press or release Ctrl any time before you release the mouse button. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |
