Now, If Microsoft will repackage Win8 for a desktop, i.e. get rid of
that stupid tablet interface, and reinstall my Wife's favorite
games,
I believe they will have a winner.

If you really want to install Win7 games there's a guide here.:
http://www.howtogeek.com/122145/what...-in-windows-8/

Dave,
I read this with interest. But, I think I have a problem in
implementing the changes.

My only Win7 copy is now the Win8. I have Vista 32bit, but the
Win7/Win8 is 64 bit. I doubt that I can copy/paste a 32 bit DLL from
my 32 bit Vista into a 64 bit machine. Please confirm.

Thanks,

The 32 bit dll goes into the relevant card games sub-folder.
Then the Microsoft Games folder is put into the Program Files (x86)
folder on a 64 bit machine.

Thanks Dave, I just now found that when I expanded the Windows.old
folder. I'm now going to locate a Hex Editor. Should be no problem
as in the old days (before retiring) I used HEX on occasion.

I had mentioned that in my reply to you earlier. Also, if you'll look a
little over half the way down the page on the article, you'll find a
download link for the Game Patcher, so you don't need to do any hex
editing. Works great!

After working most of the day on this issue, Game Patcher FIXED the
problem. Win7 games now work on Win8

Many thanks SC for your persistance in showing me the solution.

You're very welcome. Glad it worked for you (her), too :-)

There's probably lots of it around as elderly people's operating systems
don't get regular updates.

By "it" do you mean marriage, sex or solitaire?
In my case the first and third ruin the second.

Yes, but this works in 32-bit Windows 8, but not in 64-bit Windows 8.

Ken

Nope, works great in 64-bit Win8 Pro. I already did it 3 or 4 days ago.

That's good to hear. But it didn't work here. The hex editor couldn't
find the characters to edit. And Mellowed said the same thing.

Any suggestions as to what I might have been doing wrong? It was the
same things I did on my wife's 32-bit Windows, where it worked fine.

I used the Game Patcher in the link on howtogeek. Also, the Microsoft Game
folder has to go in Program Files instead of Program Files(X86). I have
Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, and FreeCell on mine, and they all work as they
did in Win 7.

I just tried again, doing the same things I had tried before. Don't
ask me what was different, but it worked this time!

Thanks.

Well, at least I don't play solitaire, FWIW.

Moon phase? Barometric pressure? Relative humidity?

I hate it when that sort of thing happens, not because I hate things
that work, but because I want to know what the problem was and how it
got fixed.

But at least it's working for you. That isn't such a bad thing...

Not bad, but not wonderful either. To tell the truth, I hardly ever
play these (or any other) games. I just was interested in making it
work.

We all love a challenge, don't we? :-) Now, if someone asks, you can say
"Yep, I got it to work."

I have decided I really don't care if Win8 works or not; it was more of the
challenge to make it work the way *I* wanted it to work :-) Eventually,
I'll probably pull that drive and go back to good ol' Win7. Or not . . .

It was a lot easier to access the same using the Windows 8 provided app.....you didn't have to use them either.
