Windows Defender is not the same as the previous Defender, which was just an antimalware program. |

Thanks, Gordon You were advised you to get rid of Norton in the Windows 7 newsgroup and my advice is the same with Windows 8, get rid of Norton. You already have Microsoft's antivirus, Defender, installed as part of Windows 8. You don't need to spend any more money on antivirus software. Dave, I'm not sure MS antivirus of any kind was installed by the manufacturer on this new computer. I have not installed any antivirus software but Norton Trial Version came with the new computer. I'll check again and see if Windows Security Essentials or anything similar is installed. Gordon Microsoft Security Essentials is for Windows 7 and below, not for Windows 8. Windows Defender is the Microsoft antivirus and antimalware program for Windows 8. As I have said, Windows Defender is already on your computer - it is part of Windows 8. All you need to do is get rid of Norton, and don't install any other antivirus software. I didn't install the current Norton setup that I have on my new computer. It was instlled by the computer manufacrurer and was already operational the first time I started the new compuer. But, I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Gordon |

Also...your posting did not say if the computer was delivered from HP with Windows 8 installed, or with Windows 7 and you've installed Windows 8 as an upgrade. Especially if the latter is the case, there's a good chance that the version of Norton Antivirus (irrespective of its reputation) isn't compatible with Windows 8. I have no experience with the Norton-branded products (so I don't know when or if a Win8-compatible version of NAV is/will be available), but the Windows 8-compatible production build of the enterprise AV package (under the Symantec brand) was just released a couple of days ago, fixing problems that made the earlier builds unusable on Win8. Gordon Typically, to uninstall Norton you have to download an uninstaller from the Symantec site. The uninstaller software is: 1. Not necessarily easy to find, and 2. Specific to the version both of Norton software and of Windows that you are running, so you have to locate the correct one. I haven't done this for a while, so I have no current or more detailed info to give you. -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

Thanks, Gordon I got the same Symantec product with a HP system. IMO the stuff causes problems so I removed it. Steve Steve, I'm headed in the same direction. Did you use the Control Panel Remove Programs function or did you use some on-line removal tool? No, add/delete programs does not clear Norton completely from your system; that's yet another objection to it. Somewhere on Norton/Symantic site there's a program that removes everything Norton-ish from the system. It may be the one given upthread a little. I finally got my computer restored to an earlier restore point and it is working very well, again, but it still has Norton installed and I can't find a workable means for getting it out of the way, totally. The Norton removal link that was posted earlier in this thread seemed to work but there were bits and pieces of Norton that showed up on my computer, after the removal process had been completed. There was a Norton Start Button in the Task Bar, but it didn't work. There were Norton lines in some of the other program windows, too. I did a restore point and everything is working well for the time being but I still want to remove Norton completely and safely. Gordon |

Yes, removing norton/symantic products completely has been a headache for years. One thing you could try is the Revo uninstaller program. There is a free version, but I don't know how deep the scans work; I've got the Pro version. You can point it to 'norton' and it will display (after some time) every registry key and file that is associated. I did a restore point and everything is working well for the time being but I still want to remove Norton completely and safely. -- Robin Bignall Herts, England |
