Default Apps not launching

I've tried posting this problem on the windows 8 forum with no luck;
hoping someone here can help.

Logged in as sole user/administrator. Running Win 8 from Classic
Desktop, no problem accessing the internet ie skype, ie10 etc.

Running from the Tile desktop, skype, IE10 and the App Store won't run.
Other apps (weather, news), do work.

I've tried: logging on as a different user; setting up a different user
MS account; resetting and uninstalling the offending apps; and even
doing a (really annoying) complete reset of Win 8. No luck.

Thank god I kept windows 7 on a separate hard drive - that continues to
work as good as gold.

What's bugging me is why the apps don't work off the tile menu but work
fine of Desktop. Where's the sense?

Can someone more knowledgeable than me (not hard) at least point me in
the right direction... please?

When I was testing Win8 in a VM, I noticed Metro was sensitive to
video driver support. Does your video card have a proper driver ?
The symptom there, might be a Metro app appearing to freeze or
just presenting a static picture. The Metro subsystem might have
certain expectations about hardware acceleration.

Just a guess (beats using permissions as an excuse).

What you call tile menu, I call Metro screen. And they can launch either
Metro applications or the standard Windows applications.

Now there are two logons under Windows 8. The standard Windows one which
we have used for years and the new one called Microsoft account. You
don't need to use the Microsoft account logon to use Windows. But some
Metro apps needs to be logged into Microsoft's account to work.

To logon, under the Power Button under Settings there is the words
"Change PC Settings". Then click on Users and on the right is that logon.

You must have an ultraportable PC (smartphone) you want to use
with it. Otherwise, moving from Windows 7 is bad. Yes, having a
fallback operating system is a good idea. Another good idea is
making incremental copies of your new installation, using Macrium
Reflect.

Sorry I wasn't clearer - I've tried already changing from logging on
with MS account and logging on as local user. Same problem.

Paul- not a video card problem. The store and IE apps give an error
message - either "you are not connected to the internet" or something
like "please try later as the network may be down or busy" (not an exact
quote.

So it's something to do with permissions...

John Doe - absolutely right about 7 - I shall ditch 8 if I can';t sort
this, phone or tablet notwithstanding.

Continue to use your search engine, using the error message.
Try "you are not connected to the internet" and "Windows 8" as
search terms, and you can find instances of previous Firewall or
AV products that are implicated.

I'm getting this same problem on a brand new pc (2 days old). None of the Bing apps
or IE will launch from the start tiles. When clicked, they go into a solid color
screen with a logo in the center. After about 3 seconds, they return to the tiles.
When I point at the upper left area of the screen, I can see that they are still
running, but still stuck on the solid screen. I've seen web sites where other people
are having this problem also. I think it's going back to Amazon tomorrow.

It's a new pc. HP tech support was useless. They wanted another $60 for Level 2
support before they would talk to me. Since my last posting I found a Microsoft web
discussion that lists several solutions. Unfortunate, none of them worked for me, but
maybe this will help others.

Interesting you say that there is not much support, I have found the
same with Dell and Samsung not being able to find newer upgrades
supporting the later OS. One example was an upgrade from Vista to W7 and
dell did not have a driver for something ??? on the MB - you would
think this was not a major update still no driver.

Say do you or Don use Avast (antivirus)? I peeked on their forums today
and some of them are talking about the same problem. And they say it
started when they installed Avast.

I peeked in there because Avast popped up asking what to do with Palm
Mail wanted to run. Which makes no sense since it shouldn't be ever
running anyway. And later, NewtPad Uninstall wanted to launch and Avast
asked the same thing. And NewtPad Uninstall shouldn't be trying to run
either. Neither makes any sense.

Started happening after a recent Virus definition update. The next
update this slowed down greatly. Got a third update and I haven't seen
it happen yet. Maybe it has something to do with those two updates.
Maybe not. Thank goodness for backups if I need to restore from an
earlier time. ;-)
