Pictures

I just transferred a large number of pictures from my camera to a
folder under Libraries - Pictures and have been trying to figure out
how I can expand the thumbnail images to full screen then step through
the whole group of pictures, one by one. I can double click on one of
the thumbnail images and get a full screen image but that is as far as
I've been able to go. What do I need to do next?

I'm talking about my new HP Pavilion with Windows 8. I still have a
goodly way to go on the learning curve, but I'm liking Windows 8 more
and more as I gain familiarity with it.

Are you using Photo Gallery to view them? If so, on the toolbar click on
slide show. The first photo will come up in full screen. You can click
pause to keep it form automatically going to the next picture or you can
click the right arrow to move to the next picture if you want to move faster
through the pictures.

The method to index and view pictures in Windows 8 is dependent upon what application is being used (default or Open With, or an
installed application not included with Windows 8)

Win8,itself, provides a few options to view pictures without any additional third party software.

Windows 8 Modern UI (fka Metro) app - Photos (default unless changed)
Windows 8 Photo Viewer (accessible via rt clicking a pic and selecting 'Open With'

- both of the above options provide the ability to index pictures forward/backward

The Open With option also provides other Windows 8 included applications to view (Internet Explorer, Paint)
- Media Center would also be present if Win8 Pro and the add-on Media Center package was installed

If you've installed other picture viewing software then other applications would be available on the Open With option
- e.g. Windows Essentials 2012 (Photo Gallery, Movie Maker) or other third party software (e.g. Irfanview, Adobe Photoshop etc.)

Personally I prefer Photo Gallery or Irfanview since they provide editing capability and both also provide the ability to index
forward/backward.

Pictures come a variety of file extensions and require one to re-associate those file types (if the Win8 Photos app is not the
desired default) with a specific program either via the program itself (if the option is provided) or via the methods avaialable in
Windows Default Programs. As noted above, if rt. clicking in when viewing pics in a folder in Explorer the Open With command is
available for any capable pic viewing application.

Thanks for the leads. I tried Photo Galery and it works pretty well.
My only objection is that it shows the image at less than full screen,
but I can see most of the fine details and I can step throught the
whole folder simply by tapping the right arrow key.

I'm into genealogy and have taken photos of the gravestones in many
old, isolated cemeteries. From time to time I need to search through
these to find information on a specific person or family. And, I need
to be able to read the obscure information on these gravestones to get
the data right. Being able to step through the folder of photos until
I locate the one I'm looking for is a quick way to do this. Then, once
I've located the image file I can open it in my photo editor and
expand it to full screen. Gordon

Irfanview does that quite handily. Left & right arrows (or pgup/pgdn) to go
forward and backward, user-configurable external editor accessed by pressing
shift+e (plus two more external editor slots in the File menu), built-in
thumbnail viewer to show the contents of the directory quickly, full-screen
available (with various zoom options: actual size, zoom to fit, stretch to
fill the screen, etc.), many options available via shift+letter or
ctrl+letter... many things that make it pretty close to a perfect viewer IMO.

Try FastStone Image Viewer. Free for home use. Does just about
everything you want to do. I've been using it for the past couple of
years and hardly ever use PhotoShop anymore.

In File explorer, go to the pictures library and make sure the File
Explorer ribbon is open. Click on Library tools/Manage, then select
"Optimise Library for" and make sure "Pictures" is checked. hen click on
a pictures folder in the pictures library to select it, or double click
it to open the folder. you should see "Picture Tools" and Manage under
that in the ribbon. Select that. Then you'll see Slide Show. Click on
the slide show and enjoy full screen pics. If the ribbon is closed, you
can open it with the down arrow on the right hand end of the menu bar at
the top). You can use the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard to
move back and forwards faster if you want.
No third party software needed.

Thanks to all for your responses. I've gotten this pretty well figured
out and am in the process of learning all the "fine tuning" stuff. I
still have a long way to go before I can claim to "know it all" but
