I have looked through my two books on Windows 8 setup and use but can
not find anything telling me how to set up some new desktop themes
using photos of my own. I can download themes and they work well but I
would like to use some photos of my own and set up a few personal
thems. Any suggestions? Gordon

Sure piece of cake. The same place you change themes, there are four
icons on the bottom called Desktop Background, Color, Sounds, and Screen
Saver. Select Desktop background. And the box that says Picture
location, press the browse button and tell it where your backgrounds are at.

Right-click on a blank area of the Start screen.
All Apps.
Help and Support.
Enter ' themes ' into the search box and click on the magnifying glass icon.
Click on 'Get started with themes'.

If all of that info makes no sense then do this:

Copy your photos into your My Pictures folder.
Go to the desktop.
Right-click on the desktop and select 'Personalise'.
At the bottom click on 'Desktop Background'.
Where it says 'Picture location' click on the down-arrow and select 'Pictures Library'.
Make your settings and 'Save changes'.
Give the new unsaved theme a name.

It's just the same as Windows 7, I can't understand why you are finding it so difficult.

Thanks Bill and Dave. I have this pretty well figured out now with the
benefits of your information. I really like my new themes. They are
made up of pictures taken while my wife and I were on vacations to
remote places. The one I lke best is the pictures taken on a train
ride from Angthorage, AK up to the North Slope and back. The wildlife
there was beautiful and very impressive. Two bull moose did a horn to
horn combat for us while the train stopped and gave us time to get
some really good pictures. Gordon

Congrats. My favorite source for desktops is NASA:
