Default Windows 8 Updates

I have Win8 Pro 64-bit (updated from Win7 HP 64-bit) on my Acer Aspire
V3-731, and have my Windows Update set to notify me of available updates,
not to install them automatically. Unfortunately, I never see any notice
that WAU is doing anything, other than a quick flash at the login screen (I
also have my system set to automatically log me in, so if I'm out of the
room, I don't see that quick flash).
I also boot directly to desktop, bypassing the MUI.
Is there any way to have Win8 notify me of available updates like earlier
versions of Windows did? Little icon in the notification area? Maybe even a
pop-up telling me I have updates ready to download and install?

The quick way to see them is by pressing Win+R and pasting in:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update

Or just go to Windows Update in the Control Panel.

I can do that, but it's not a notification of pending updates. I can also
click on Start, Windows Updates, but that's not a notification either ;-)

According to this page:

How To Change Windows Update Settings in Windows 8
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/window...-windows-8.htm

The notification should be there. All of my machines are set to "Check
Only". And if I remember correctly, Windows 8 only notifies you once
after it checks and only if there is something new.

I guess I wasn't clear enough when I said I already had updates set to
"notify me of available updates, not to install them automatically."
All I want is something to pop up and tell me "Updates are available", like
the icon in the system tray (notification area) did in XP, Vista, and Win7.
If I don't manually check now and then to see what's available, Win8 never
tells me.

That's odd, a few days ago i got notification that there were about 15
updates ready to instal, My screen darkened to a grayish color and about
a 2 inch band appeared right across the center of the screen, I think it
was blueish or dark gray, didn't really pay attention but checked the
updates and installed 13. Next time I will pay attention.

Regards, Rene

That is what I am saying. I think you get the notification when it
checks for updates and there are some. What time this happens I think is
set in the Task Scheduler. And if you are not there to see it, then I
think you missed it.

Say go here to the Action Center. And open up Security. And if Windows
Update is toggled off, then I don't think you ever will see a notification.

Well, it looks like in spite of everything we try, it's never going to work
the way I'd like it to:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/11/14/minimizing-restarts-after-automatic-updating-in-windows-update.aspx

Looks bad for those of us in the same situation as I am. Since I'm the only
user and the only one to have access to my PCs, I have them set for
auto-login, so unless I sit and wait for the login screen, I'm not going to
be notified of impending updates/restarts. Oh well, I guess I'll just check
for updates on my Win8 machine after I get notification on my Win7 one.

Well, I got a ~2" high stripe across the middle of my screen yesterday
stating that "Windows updates are available." My choices were Install or
Close. I picked Close and updated it through the WU GUI since I wasn't sure
if Install would do just that, or if it would let me first see what updates
are available and allow me to choose.

I guess that's the extent of my notification. Good or bad, looks like that's
what I'm stuck with. Works for me.
