Out of interest - does anybody here actually use Media Center? (Or
centre) :-)

What advantage does it have over VLC or similar?

The Media Center isn't really a media player per se. Sure it does this
and a whole lot more. Here this will give you lots of details about it.

Once in a blue moon, I have a DVB-T tuner in my laptop and it's
convenient, though I have used VLC with tuners in the past, it's not so
friendly

Thanks all. Will get it while it's free and cautiously play with it...

So far with MCE, I managed to mount an ISO9660 containing a
non-commercial movie, and with the GSpot information appliance, was
able to render a VOB file to screen (audio and video). There was one
small problem, where I got an error trying to render just the video
track by itself. But playing both video and audio at the same time
worked. The CODEC used and mentioned, was:

Microsoft DTV DVD Video Decoder

The CODEC count claims to have gone from 99 to 101, from Windows 8 Pro
to Windows 8 Pro + MCE key. So the difference between the two options
is pretty small. At least so far.

I haven't fired up MCE program yet, to test it. I have a WinTV
card, but I doubt it'll be able to use it. I have an OTA digital
settop box connected to the WinTV card (comes in on composite input).
I can't see how I'll "get the MCE full effect", when I have such
crappy hardware for it. And my OTA channel count is too low to
bother buying a proper tuner.
