Did w8 installer address usb3 keyboard/mouse problem?

Hi All,

I have noticed that under BIOS, I am able to plug a USB
keyboard and mouse into a USB3 jack and not have a
problem. The problem starts when the Windows 7 installer
takes over and does not recognize your USB3 ports.
(You have to find a USB2 port until you are all installed
and have installed your USB3 driver.)

Does anyone know if the Windows 8 installer addressed this issue?
Or do I still have to make sure I use USB2 ports for keyboard
and mouse during installation?

I don't know for sure but MS claims full USB support for Win8

OTOH: It would sure be a waste of a USB-3 port to put a keyboard or
mouse on it. I'd use USB-3 for data transfer.

You could do one of these things:

1. Just use the USB2 port and not worry.

2. Try the USB3 port and inform those who read this NG of the results so
we'll all know.

Thank you!

First time though, I never checked the color of the tangs on
the USB ports. Sure got my attention in a hurry! :-)

One thing I like about USB3 is the 0.75 Amp power spec.,
up from 0.5 Amp. Now I am not so afraid to plug power
draining stuff into them. (Would have been nice if
they had gone all the way to 1.5 Amp, like Firewire.)
I hated those two USB port dongles to add more power
to a device.

If I remember I will. I haven't got anyone asking for w8
yet, but I know the box stores are selling computers with it
preinstalled. Before I actually do a custom system with it,
I will wait for all the major software vendors to come out
with their patches.

Well, I am way behind the curve here, I do not have anything USB-3
but it sure looks like a good idea.

When my present 1TB external drive starts getting filled, I will be
looking into USB-3 when it comes time to get another drive.
I will have to add a USB-3 card

Microsoft took over the USB driver support/code for the intel/renasas
& asmedia usb 3 chips; win8 includes the usb 3 drivers of ms developed.
Both the asmedia & intel sites don't show any win8 usb 3 driver saying
that the drivers are now done by microsoft.

I don't think the driver works well with my system causing lots of
crashes as in didn't get pass the 2 hr mark without a BSOD of "driver
power failure state". the drivers didn't see my usb 3 hdd as usable
as it claims that it wasn't "initialized".

Check the m$ social community support website for more info about
the usb 3 drivers as some have it working but at usb 2 level.

I'm back on win7 & will be checking the m$ knowlodge base for further
info/update on the usb 3 every so often. Not going back to win8 until
usb 3 works for me.

Of course, USB3 is supposed to be backwards compatible, so you should be
OK.

Of course, USB3 is supposed to be backwards compatible, so you should be

They took a unique approach to that.

On the back of the computer, if you look at the blue USB connector,
it has two sets of pins. One set is USB2, the other set carries
only USB3 protocol at 5Gbit/sec. That way, they didn't try to mix
them on the same set of wires.

That's unlike the backward compatibility on a lot of other
interfaces, where the same tired set of wires, keeps getting
faster and faster signals put on it. In this case, they just
said "screw it", and put a good set of wires on it. Sort of
the same treatment as you'd need for SATA or PCI Express.

The yellow-blue and orange-purple pairs, are the high speed
TX and RX of USB3. (Just like SATA has high speed TX and RX, and
PCI Express also has high speed TX and RX pairs.) The green and
white wires would be "D+" and "D-" of USB2. The high speed TX
and RX has a shield around the pair, as well as a drain wire
inside.
