Icon disappearing from Windows tray
I'm running a program on Windows 8. I usually keep the display minimised
to the Windows tray but sometimes the icon disappears and, although the program is still running, I just cannot get the display back short of using the task manager to close the program or rebooting the computer. As I can't get to the display, it's not possible to exit the program normally. Clicking on the program tells me that I cannot start another instance of the program. This hasn't happened to any other programs that I minimise. Has anyone else had this happen to them? David -- David Rance writing from Caversham, Reading, UK |

I run lot of machines here and one of the benefits is seeing if it is hardware or software related. And my thought if it only happens on Windows 8 machines is that they are not totally Windows 8 compatible. It doesn't have to be that program per se, but another program, driver, etc. that just something to do with a lot of different programs that just doesn't get it right with Windows 8 with that one. Care to tell us what program it is? As maybe we could tell you more. -- Bill Dell Latitude Slate Tablet 128GB SSD ('12 era) - Thunderbird v24.3.0 Intel Atom Z670 1.5GHz - 2GB RAM - Windows 8 Pro |

David My experience is in Windows 7; I'm not sure whether it works the same in 8 or whether it's really your problem, but here it is... I have found that my Windows 7 system tray occasionally loses visible items, but they are in the rest of the tray that's revealed when I click the up arrow. You should then be able to manage your program from the hidden panel. Also, I click on Customize and rechoose the display mode that I want for the item that went hidden. It sticks for a while (a day, a week, it varies). -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

As implied by your info above. Too bad it's not a simple thing like that... -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |
