Windows 10 serial
I have windows 8 on an internal hard disk, the laptop has secure boot
disabled. I have an evaluation copy of windows 10 installed on an external usb disk. When I boot into windows 10 the product key is flagged as invalid, it has been changed to the windows 8 one. I can of course re-enter the correct one but do not want to have to do this every time, any help appreciated. MJP |

I myself worried about syncs between win8 and win10 so I simply went into settings on win10 and turned off all sync. On initial boot it changed my lock screen to the win8 one. It was a customized image with WINDOWS 8.1 written across it. So I had to fix the win10 one just so I didn't get confused. I still can't believe though that MS syncs keys though. That's kinda odd. Mine runs fine but I'm running in a virtual machine. But I'd still turn off sync if I were you. Just a oddball suggestion. |

On a Win8/Win8.1 OEM laptop, there will be an MSDM table in the BIOS, with a Windows 8 license key. The Windows 10 Preview seems to be picking this up. That's because the operating system examines a whole bunch of BIOS tables at startup (ACPI tables), so it is natural to acquire all the tables. People with home-built computers (like me), will see none of this behavior. Windows 10 Preview disk doesn't suck anything out of my Windows 8.1 disk. It behaves properly. And that's because my Asus motherboard doesn't have an MSDM table in the BIOS tables. I'm not even sure you can override the MSDM value, using "slui 3" and changing the license key. There must be a way to do that, because Enterprise customers need to use their VL license key for legal reasons. So there should be a way to tell the OS to stop sucking the key out of the MSDM table. But I can't find a reference on the subject. Paul |

I've reloaded my windows 8.1 from a USB, so I can say it's available in 8. Never tried 7, but why wouldn't any boot device work? |

My /guess/ is that it does not...but in this case it worked because the boot partition was on the internal drive |
