Decided step one would be to read the Virtualbox manual, So D/Led it and
started to look at the Index and it nearly frazzled my brain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy Moly the manual is a 403 page PDF.........
I think I may give up this Idea now :-)

I just downloaded and installed Virtual box and am in the middle of
installing a Vista OS within it. I didn't need the manual for doing
that, it's pretty straightforward with little hints built in as you
go. I'm sure there are plenty of uses of the info in the manual but
getting it going can be done without reading it.

You can install it and it mostly just works for compatible client OS's.
One thing that's easy to overlook is the hardware emulation.
Run thru that menu BEFORE you install the OS.
I've had instances of XP where I decided, after the fact, that I needed
to allocate more ram and change other hardware parameters. That broke
XP activation.
I've had instances where updating VirtualBox broke XP activation.
In all cases, I've been able to run activation again and it fixed itself.
But, I do think there's a limit on how many times you can do that before
you're labeled a pirate and get blocked.

Such is not a problem with linux clients.

Lately, I've given up on emulation altogether.
When you can get competent computer hardware at garage sales
and thrift stores at giveaway prices it's just far less hassle
to go native.

Or just do it. It's not that complex - you shouldn't need the manual.

A lot of people don't read manuals, and have nothing but problems.

I'm guessing that an even larger number of people don't routinely read
manuals and have no problems at all.

I would say "Most." And I would say most will have problems,
eventually, whether they've read the manual or not. It's the nature of
the beasts.

Fortunately these days, application installers have gotten more
sophisticated, and require little, if any, input from the user.
Installing is not so much the problem, it's using the app properly.
And for that, reading the manual is necessary. Of course, since the
average high school graduate only reads at an elementary school level,
the manual is probably well beyond their comprehension level. Sad.

Personally, I rarely read manuals and don't have problems, but if something
does happen to come up, I readily reach for the manual, or better yet, just
Google it.

I'm similarly experienced, but I still prefer to, at least, review the
instructions before installing any new app, etc., then study it in
more detail as I gain experience in its use. However, to each his own.

As to the OP, since he has NO experience with VirtualBox, a quick read
through of the installation and configuration sections of the manual
-- it's only about 5 or so pages of the 400 -- will go a long way in
preventing future problems. VB can be quirky, if you don't set things
up properly from the get-go.

Fine is okay, but wouldn't better be better? There are a lot of
features in VirtualBox that improve performance and usability that are
not enabled during a standard install. You would never know this unless
you read, at least, part of the manual.

You use the manual, if you want to learn
about the VBoxManage command line utility.

For basic VM operation, there is less to know
about that.

That's true, too. But the manual is also for non-commandline use as
well. That's why it's over 400 pages! ;-)

"Basic" is just basic. But you'll never know that unless you read some
of the manual. But I guess ignorance can be bliss.
