Default Network madness - help!?

We have four computers on our LAN. Two run Win98SE, one runs Win2000, one
ison XP Pro. Every now and then, they're all visible to each other, although
I've never yet managed to access the Win2000 machine from the XPPro machine
(I get a demand for a password, although I've deactivated every sharing
feature I can find on the Win2000 machine that could require one, including
the user "Guest" group).
Periodically, for no visible reason at all, the network fragments. Just now,
for example, one Win98SE machine can see three other machines (not XPPro),
one Win98SE machine can't find anything on the network, the XPPro denies
that any network exists "The server is not configured etc", and the Win2000
can see the two Win98Se machines but only see the "Shared folder" on the
XPPro machine.
I hadn't changed anything, all the drives on all machines are shown as
shared for all, no password, no restrictions, read, write, change ...
Anybody got any ideas, please? This is just too crazy.
