Default Date jpg was created

Hello,
Please let me know if anyone knows a forum more appropriate for this
question.
An attorney friend of mine has a .jpg dated 1998. This is for a court
case.
He asked if there was any way to confirm that was the date the picture
was taken.
My first response was : the date of a .jpg could easily be faked by
changing the
date on your computer before downloading.
I asked him if the .jpg was a scan, downloaded from a camera, etc and
he wasn't sure.
Is there any 'data' in a jpg that might be useful to determine the
date/time a picture was taken.
IE, I was thinking if the picture was downloaded from a camera,
regardless of the date and time
on the computer, the camera itself may have stamped it. If so, how
would I retrieve this info?
TIA
