![]() When I try and open a password protected .docx file with Word 2000 a small window appears with this message in it: __________________________________________________ ____ The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. *Check the file permissions for this document or drive. *Use the file open dialog box to locate the document. __________________________________________________ ____ Those "suggestions" don't give me much of a clue. The same file will open OK in later versions of Word or Open Office, after asking for and receiving the password. Password protected .doc files created with Word 2000 will open correctly in Word 2000. Is there something I can do to open those password protected .docx files in Word 2000? Word 2000 can't read .docx files directly, password protected or not. Some try a file format converter, but that doesn't always work. You could try installing LibreOffice or OpenOffice. Both can read docx files, then save as a doc file which w2000 can laod. Stef |

I don't know if that was ever fixed today. First it is a mtter of the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack. Then it is a matter of the encryption algorithm. For Office 2000 to open an encypted document, it would have to be encrypted by a method available to Office 2000 such as "Microsoft Base Cryptograhic Provider v1.0". That was before to Windows CryptoAPI which is used Today. Microsoft Base Cryptograhic Provider v1.0 is now a part of the Windows CryptoAPI but a later version of MS Office would choose an enhanced Cryptograhic routine with a higher bit strength. Office 2000 could not decrypt the file because the routine ( algorithm ) was not avaliable 15+ years ago. -- Dave Multi-AV Scanning Tool - http://multi-av.thespykiller.co.uk http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp |

However Word Viewer was provided in 2007 to coincide with the XML added file formats of Office 2007. A 2004 product could not open a DOCx as the file format had not been created yet. -- Dave Multi-AV Scanning Tool - http://multi-av.thespykiller.co.uk http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp |
