I try the above and it is already enabled. I follow the directions of
Microsoft resolution 0x800A0046 but when I click on OK of "Impersonate a
client after authentication policy" "Service and Administrator " it says
"administators and SERVICE must be granted the impersonate cliant after
authentication privlege" when I restart it says comands not saved.
MSC Messenger also won't log in. Skype workes fine.
Everything else seems to be working fine apart for the security alert &
update problem. Can anyone help me get full control back????

Can anyone help me get full control back????

Uninstall Norton 360. Restart.
Download, save, then run the Norton Removal tool. Restart.
http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal...NRT_d4749.html

See if the update error is still occurring. If it is, then follow the
steps in the KB article that failed previously due to the presence of N360:
Error message when you visit the Windows Update Web site or the
Microsoft Update Web site: "0x800A0046"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910338

Try this step *first* !

" Step 4: Verify the security descriptor in the Automatic Updates service
On Windows Server 2003-based and Windows XP-based clients "

Then, install an antivirus that is compatible with XP:

Free

Antivir:
http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1...antivirus.html
Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Paid

NOD32: http://www.eset.com/download/index.php
F-Secu http://www.f-secure.com/en_US/downloads/

Thanks Mowgreen,
I uninstalled Norton 360 but could only do it through the Admin account.
Updates still failed.
I then went on to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910338
Step 4 didn't work. When I tried step 1 I clicked on "computers" the window
disapered.
didn't try step 3
Tried step 5 without Norton and it worked this time, restarted and went into
my normal account and it is now limited, logged on to Admin account and
Update worked.
I will try installing Norton 360 again and give my normal account admin
rights and see what happens.
Thanks again and I will keep you updated if the problem comes back

Thanks for posting back with which step worked.
As to reinstalling N360 ... that's your choice BUT, an automatic
updating issue will reappear because it's *not* compatible with XP.
If it's not the Local Security Policy then it will be BITS that fails.
If it's not BITS then it will a blocked installation of an ActiveX
component when the Windows Update Agent is updated, etc.
