Win8's Start Screen is more flexible than the old style Start Menu since
one can create groups, rearrange tiles, resize tiles, turn tiles on/off
(e.g. one can have a News or Weather tile that updates with current
content). Many folks interpret the live tiles as advertising - it is not.

I don't call the tiles 'advertising'. I prefer to call them 'annoying'. ;-)

You could be annoyed for the foreseeable future [or longer]. ;-)

I hope not. I've pretty much got them under control now and don't have to
see them anymore. It was rough there for a while, though.

As long as MSFT sells tablets and attempts to sell phones those tiles
should have some staying power.

In fact tiles might actually be deja vu for quite a few people

I remember that. AOL was actually a GEOS application back then. While
you didn't get GEOS the OS, you got GEOS the runtime library to run
AOL.

I remember those icons. I got away from them as soon as I could find a
local provider.

I remember the time that I spent waiting for them to load on my 56 b modeom

Tiles in a UI have a long history..nothing new. Microsoft employed the
use of tiles in MSN software (dial up or byo isp) for quite some time
after the initial MSN Classic UI that was included/bundled with Win95.

Even prior to that a few versions of Apple ][+ bulletin board software
had a sysop option to deploy titles for bbs rooms instead of room lists
for users with the capable hardware, those without would see the
standard text listing...some later versions late 80's, early 90's even
had ribbon menus.
