I have not been offered the update yet, but have been looking at picture
of the Desktop in Windows 10.

It looks like in Windows 10 half of the taskbar is taken up with a
search window. Can this be removed and return to the old style search
bar that has been in Windows 8.1 and all versions before?

You can either switch the search field an icon, or hide it altogether,
in practice you don't need it, if you press start you can just start
typing something you want to search for anyway ...

And then be sure to click "My stuff" otherwise it searches the Net.

by default it searches local and the web, but you can turn off the web
and app store searches

When search results are shown in the window, click the gear in the left
margin and use the slider to turn off search online and include web results

Excellent! Thank you - I've been looking for such an option for a long
time. I don't think it was there during the Preview builds.

I thought it was just insane for Windows to go searchin on the Internet
for something I knew was local. I guess someone at Microsoft thought
so, too.
