How do you un-set a file association
Win-10-PRO 1709
Somehow Firefox set itself as the default app for files type pdf. I have installed an old version of Adobe Acrobat. In control panel I found a way to associate pdf's with it. However, whenever I click on a pdf file, Windows offers me a choice of which app - Acrobat or Firefox. How can I get it to associate ONLY with Acrobat so that clicking the pdf file opens it in Acrobat immediately? Every search Google page I have found references a Control Panel that does not match mine in this regard. -dan z- -- Someone who thinks logically provides a nice contrast to the real world. How do you un-set a file association
Well, I partially answered the question:
regedit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Under pdf were a program id (points to Acrobat) and "FirefoxHTML" I deleted the FirefoxHTML entry. I then duplicated the \.pdf entry here into HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\classes But clicking on a pdf file still doesn't open it directly in Acrobat. Now the choices are "Acrobat" and "Find another program...." -dan z- -- Someone who thinks logically provides a nice contrast to the real world. (Anonymous) |

Pick an app and make it default. |

How can I get it to associate ONLY with Acrobat so that clicking the pdf file opens it in Acrobat immediately? Go to Settings Apps Default Apps Scroll down past the displayed icons to: “Choose default applications by file type” Now we will use .pdf as an example: Scroll down to .pdf (On my PC, and in the column to the right of .pdf, I see an icon with the label “Foxit Reader 9.0”. That is currently my choice for reading PDF files). If I wish to change the app I can click that label or the icon and I will get a list of apps which can read PDF files. Now if I click on the name or icon of any app that I wish to use for viewing .pdf files I will see that name and app selected as my choice for reading PDF files. The new app may not display the file icon correctly in your file manager until you restart your file manager. |

See this pictu https://i.imgur.com/YTh1ZFY.png https://i.imgur.com/YTh1ZFY.png Yup, that is what I did to get Acrobat to be A (one of) default app. Still trying to get it to be THE default app. When logical doesn't work, default to silly. Win-10 seems very inconsistent in this regard. Right clicking on some files gets an "open with" option, some times not. The "open with" option some times allows browsing for something not listed, some times not. If there is a good option, some times there is an "always open .... files with" check box, some times not. I can not discern any pattern or logic to these variations. -dan z- -- Someone who thinks logically provides a nice contrast to the real world. (Anonymous) |

There's a basic 2-step system for default programs in the Registry, but like so many things, Microsoft have mucked it up and added complicated layers of complexity. HKCR\.pdf should have a default value. That was probably the "FirefoxHTML". I'm guessing the "program id" was under HKCR\OpenWithList\ or some other subkey. You didn't specify that. In other words, you probably didn't set the default program. You set an item on the Open With... list. The way a default program gets assigned: HKCR\.xyz default value: "xyzfile" HKCR\xyzfile\shell\open\command\ default value: "C:\Program Files\XyzEd.exe" "%1" You can either write the HKCR\.xyz default value yourself, or you can change the target key. In other words, if you have a class key named something like "AdobePDF" then you can just change HKCR\.pdf default value from "FirefoxHTML" to "AdobePDF". Alternatively, you can create the keys yourself (assuming Acrobat doesn't have an option) by creating the HKCR\.pdf default value and then pointing it to a key you create. For instance, HKCR\.pdf default value "PDFFile1", in conjunction with a key HKCR\PDFFile1\shell\open\command\ The default value there would then be the Acrobat path. For default opening there must be a shell\open\command subkey that corresponds to the HKCR\.xyz default value. If you're using the current user values then you'll also need to either update or delete the entries under HKCU\software\classes. (Personally I never use those, but if you have multiple users set up you might want to do it that way.) |

The bar is not too obvious at first glance; it looks like a thin black line until you hover your mouse over it and then it expands and will LOOK like a slide bar. Scrolling down about 4-5 cm. you willgo past an option to: "Reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults" IGNORE THAT! Next will be three options - the first of which is: "Choose default applications by file type" CHOOSE THAT ONE!!! Scroll down to .pdf The application shown is Acrobat. Left click on either the icon OR application name and you will see a choice of other apps that can read PDF files. Click on the program of your choice. You can refer to my original reply for any further instructions. Of course, if you have been changing any registry settings then all bets are off. Good luck. |
