Function Keys on Dell Laptop
Windows 10 Home, 64-bit, all current updates. Seems to be working fine.
You know how F5 is supposed to put a time/datestamp on Notepad and/or Wordpad when they are open and in focus? This works on all my other computers, currently Windows 10 Pro and Windows XP. It worked all the way back to Win9x. On the brand new Dell it does not work. The Dell tech support (warranty) doesn't know. Google searches are baffling and confounding... Anybody ever heard of this type issue before? Thanks in advance. |

On some newer laptops (not sure about Dells) the Fn key seems to be reversed, so that the keys alone have their dedicated function (sleep, toggle monitors, etc) and you have to press Fn+F5 to get the normal F5 operation ... worth a try |

F5 works for putting the time/date stamp in Notepad on my almost 2 yr. old Dell laptop but not in WordPad. Mind you, WordPad already has an icon on the toolbar ribbon to insert a form of that. AW |

Have you tried prying it up, like with a fingernail emery board (flexible but stiff enough to lift a key)? What does the blue legend of the F5 key says it does? If you turn over the keyboard and tap the laptop to shake out the filth behind the keyboard keys, does a lot of debris fall out? Been feeding the keyboard any soda in the past? |

So you had to hit Fn+Key to turn the wi-fi off or dim screen etc. You can change in BIOS/UEFI how function keys work. On Toshiba you can so I suspect it works in Dell Laptop as well. I don't have a Dell laptop to check it out. The change is to avoid using the Fn key. /--- This email has been checked for viruses by Windows Defender software. //https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/comprehensive-security/ -- With over 600 million devices now running Windows 10, customer satisfaction is higher than any previous version of windows. |

Same for me (F5 adds date in Notepad, does nothing in Wordpad) on Windows 7 Home x64. Don't have any hosts at home to test with older versions of Windows to see what F5 does in Notepad and Wordpad there. |

On all of my OSs, including Win10 Home Premium, 16299.371, the Fn5 key places the date in a Notepad file only, not in a Wordpad file. My 'newish' Dell laptop does have two sets of actions launched by the Fn1-Fn12 keys. One set of actions is launched by pressing any one of the Fn1-Fn12 keys alone, while the other set of actions is launched by pressing the Fn key (next to the Windows key) AND one of the Fn1-Fn12 keys, together with the Fn key. |

I use Notepad all the time for memos and notes, etc. That's why the time and date stamp feature of F5 is so handy. I open Notepad and automatically click F5 to provenance when the memo was started. If I'm memorializing a telephone call, I'll click F5 when put on hold, then click again when the conversation resumes or I am transferred, etc. I do it so much now that it has become second nature and a feature I miss very much when not available. |

So you're saying F5 works normally as 'refresh' when in other programs, and only fails when in notepad? |
