Personal opinion but I think you got a bur up your ass for win 10.
I do a ton of work on win 10 being an ex programmer and I compile,
design, make web pages, ftp, games, support for other people etc.

Maybe not your everyday, but I'm not playing solitaire all day!
And I've gone back to XP several times and find win 7 much much better
and I loved 8.1 (once I fixed the menu thing).

I'd rather back track to windows 8.1 but the world marches on like it
or not.

PS. I'm running linux now for 18 months. So I did give it up but
rather than complain, I did something.

One of the reasons I answered his question, is I've been
seeing a little bit too much "green bar" myself here in
Win10. And I was looking for an answer for myself too.

Initially, the Win10 viewing of my Download folder was
pretty fast. No green bar at all. But in recent days,
I've been seeing the green bar, and since the ownership
of my Downloads folder is not in dispute, I cannot
use "permissions" or Takeown behavior as an excuse.

Deleting those 43 files, seemed to help. Time will tell.

Paul

I was trying to figure out myself if it was indexing or what, but now
that I only use it for maybe 2 hours a month, it's kind of a useless
expenditure of time on my part to figure out a solution.

AFAIK, Explorer is updating and index or cache. I got rid of it somehow,
IIRC I turned off Windows indexing. Since the last update (courtesy
WannaCry), the green bar has reappeared. Deleting even one file triggers
the green bar. I'm going to tweak the services Real Soon Now, so I
expect the green bar to go away after that.

The Index is updated, based on the NTFS journal.

That means the Index updates are "event based" in steady state.
It's not a "snoopin on what yer doin" interface.

If you save a file in C:\users\wolf\Downloads\newworddoc.docx,
an entry to that effect is stored in the NTFS journal. The Indexing
engine checks for new journal events, and adds that one to the
Index. By the time you open File Explorer again to that window,
the indexing is already done.

The Index rebuilds itself every three months, since
NTFS journal operation is not infinitely reliable. A user
could flip over to Linux OS, boot, and upset it. In cases
where the OS knows the journal has been screwed around,
it could decide to rebuild the index then.

On a rebuild, it should recursively descend the entire
partition, taking into account the exclusion pattern configured
by the user in the Indexing control panel.

But once the index is built, it uses journal "I gotta fresh file
for you" interface. The third-party search tool Everything.exe,
I believe it is wired to the journal as well. There is no journal
on FAT32, which is why coverage of FAT32 cannot work the same
way. Your C: partition is not FAT32. Many tools (both MS and
third party) treat FAT32 worse than NTFS. But some commercial
$$$ tools seem to have no trouble treating them at the same level.
For example, Macrium can mount MRIMGed disks on an OS which has
a FAT32 C: drive, which is not something that Microsoft staff
could do :-) (You can do anything you want, if you go to the
trouble of doing IFS Installable File System interface.)

*******

I don't feel the Index has anything to do with this.

That's the real answer. If you choose to use a particular OS, learn to
make it work for you the best you can. Otherwise, use something else.
The childish whining that the nymshifting OP does here every day is a
waste of his and our time. It just demonstrates that he is (a) clueless
about computers and (b) looking for attention, not assistance.

It is not quite that easy. Switching to a different OS family
can be difficult. Microsoft does not make it easy: there are forced
and effectively-forced upgrades in versions which break other
software. If one wishes to switch to another family and the huge app
one has developed only runs on Microsoft OSs, one is stuck. (In my
case, the language the app was developed in used to be supported on
Macs, too, but Microsoft dropped that long ago.)

I had my XP box die on me. I switched to my Windows 7 box which
I had not used much.

I found that Windows 7 broke some key parts of my development
environment. Murphy had a shot at me, too, as I had to get my
environment working under 7 right when I had an important iteration to
get out. I was not pleased.

Microsoft tools were not helpful. I have 16-bit apps that would
no longer run. (Yes, legacy code which means it works.) XP Mode does
not work properly on my system. Why I do not know. I have
Professional Edition so that is not it. My laptop came with Home
Edition which does not support XP Mode (Why did Microsoft do that?),
and any solution should work on both. I ended up using a
non-Microsoft solution.

I have also seen some quirks in the behaviour of Windows 7. I
know of one race condition bug in file copying which I never saw in
Windows before 7. Some of the GUI acts a little bit off.

I was greatly impressed by Microsoft, but as I say in situations
like this, not in a positive manner.

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

I believe that that's all true. But you obviously did what you had
to do the find a workable solution. I assume you asked intelligent
questions, considered the options, and made your best decision. I
also assume you didn't just go into a forum of users and do nothing
but whine incessantly with no intention or desire to get help.

What do you think of Apple computers and their OS?

Wonderful stuff.

Ya got three thousand bucks ?

I have a duel quad core Apple computer with 12 gigs RAM that
cost around $100. Will that do?
It has a dual layer DVD burner and 256 MB video RAM.
It was made in 2009.

At one time, I was paying $150.00 per OS revision
on my machine. And your support didn't last for ten
years on that %150 investment either. You could be
ponying up more money in a year or two.

You should be well-greased with money, before you go there.

My machine came with Safari browser. Which worked with, oh,
about 50% of websites. For the entire life of the machine,
I was using Firefox instead (comes as a .dmg).

MacOSX has many wonderful attributes, but they're not
things that matter to most people. It's the first impressions
that matter. Like the mouse that stays in the packing crate,
because no "human" would ever use it. And on the newer models,
the keyboard with *poor contrast* on characters. That too stayed
in the box.

Couldn't you use a standard keyboard and mouse?
I find the older Apple keyboards to be quite OK.

When you're paying a high price, and then leaving stuff (and
software) in the box, you have to ask yourself why you are
doing that.

Why are you doing that?

Some of the older stuff was much better. We had a lot of Macs at work.
The little TV-like thing (Mac SE?), we had a backpack version of
that, and there were employees fighting to take that home
at night (for work at home). I spent many happy years on a
Mac II for email and documentation. The OS (cooperative multitasking)
was crap at the time, and you had to plan on one or two crashes
a day. I used to keep MacsBug loaded on that machine, and
do "g finder" when it dies. On cooperative multitasking OSes,
any third-party application can crash the computer, any time
it wants to. Your experience is a function of how flaky the
software you use, happens to be. On the other hand, MacOSX is
preemptive and just as bulletproof as modern preemptive
Windows OSes (I don't remember any kernel panics
ever on my G4). All the modern OSes (Windows/MacOSX/Linux) are
preemptive and in the same class in that respect. There are
no longer glaring differences.

I had a G3 imac and still have a G5 imac and an early intel imac.
I also have five intel Xserves and even a G3 Powerbook.

Most of what we discuss now, is differences in DEs. Like
the OPs problem with File Explorer.

I have a custom built PC with three sound cards.
There are no Windows 10 drivers for those sound cards.

The only time I've had more than 1 sound card was when the other wasn't
really a sound card, but a cassette player with USB.

Avast doesn't make you do it. It does it by default, but it's easy to
turn off. Lucifer Morning star, like so many other people using Avast
and so many other different programs, just accepts the default, and
doesn't even look to see how to turn it off.

And besides spreading the company's spam, "This email has been checked

it was appended to is *not* an e-mail message.
