O.T. Malwarebytes:
I have a Dell XPS 8500, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1,
with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender and Windows firewall. (1) TB HD Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-33-3770 CPU @ 3.40 GHz Ram 12.0 GB System type : 64-bit operating system I also have I have a Dell Optiplex 780 Tower, with Windows 7 Professional, SP1, with Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, Avast , Windows Defender and Windows firewall. Intel (R) Core 2 Duo 2.93 GHz 4GB RAM, 750 GB HD System type : 64-bit operating system and (external hard drives) (8500) WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive (780) Seagate Desktop HDD ST2000DM001 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive The problem I'm having is that every time I click on the Malwarebytes icon to open up it gives me this: http://i64.tinypic.com/2ir2o11.jpg I can do scan OK, but I shouldn't be getting this. Should I just download a clean copy? I don't seem to have it in my download folder so I would appreciate a link if possible. Thoughts/Suggestions? Thanks, Robert |

Since both your systems run Windows 7, wouldn't you get better
responses in a Windows 7 newsgroup? It's entirely possible for an XP-oriented answer to be completely inappropriate for your systems. He is coming in via Google Groups. There is no alt.windows7.general in Google Groups. Google Groups is also missing Win8 and Win10 groups, plus there are missing Linux ones as well. The microsoft.public.windowsxp.general group is available on USENET *and* Google Groups. That's why he is here. Paul |

Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk3\DR3" A look through Google, shows that problem has been around for at least *six* years. You'd think they'd eventually figure it out. They're trying to scan either: 1) A disk that isn't "ready" when it should be. This is highly unlikely to be the root cause. Even a hard drive that spins down, would spin up in time to be probed. 2) It's a removable media drive. You have a card reader which presents four (unmounted) volumes. Malwarebytes could be attempting to probe the card reader. To prevent (2), you'd find a recipe that "removes drive letters for card reader when not in usage". This shows a tick box for Windows 7. https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...er-folder.html The folder options dialog can be found in File Explorer, using pictures nearer the end of this page. https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ions-open.html Setting such an option, will cause the four card reader drive letters to go away (when not being used), but will also cause the optical drive letter to go away. Just in case you were wondering where the optical drive letter went. When media is in the drive, the letter should come back. You also have the option of opening Disk Management, and before making *any* changes, try to determine what device is "\Device\Harddisk3". I think it's your card reader, but it would be nice to verify that. Paul |

O.T. Malwarebytes:
I should of clarified in my original post that
this is happening only on the Dell 8500. I checked and I already have my drives hidden and the don't show hidden folders option is checked. I couldn't find anything in Disk Management Um, I know this is going to sound stupid but what exactly is 'my' card reader on the 8500? You say I have one that represents (4) volumes? I don't know what that means. The only thing 'different' is that I had a free trial version of their premium service which ran out recently. Thanks, Robert |

Thanks, Robert When you look in Disk Management on the affected machine, do you see this ? +-------+- - - - -------+ | Disk0 | | +-------+- - - - -------+ +-------+- - - - -------+ | Disk1 | | +-------+- - - - -------+ +-------+- - - - -------+ | Disk2 | | +-------+- - - - -------+ +-------+- - - - -------+ | Disk3 | | === error message references this one +-------+- - - - -------+ Do you see anything that resembles a disk 3 in Disk Management ? On a machine with a card reader, there may be "rows" in the table, but with no partition definitions (when media is not present). The error message should at least correspond to a row in Disk Management. Paul |

Robert I see Disk 0 - An ordinary rotating hard drive, 1TB size Disk1,2,3,4 - A card reader with no media plugged in - Letters assigned G: F: D: H: Optical E: The thing is, Malwarebytes scans C: on Disk 0 first. Then, it goes looking for letter D: . It finds letter D: (nominally) on Disk3. Disk3 has no media. Then, the Malwarebytes error message appears on your screen. ******* The evidence is all there, assuming that picture came from the affected computer. Paul |

So is there a way to change it so the pop-up
doesn't appear? Strange it never happened before. Here's my folder options: http://i64.tinypic.com/6s41u0.jpg Robert |

Here's my folder options: http://i64.tinypic.com/6s41u0.jpg Robert I had to think about this a bit before responding. I don't want to cook up a recipe that damages something. https://superuser.com/questions/3421...drives-letters Of the solutions there, only one solution is "clean" and that's to use Uwe Sieber's "USB Drive Letter Manager". https://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbdlm_e.html "Card Readers The typical 20-in-1 card reader eats one drive letter for each of its slots - if we own a card for or not. USBDLM can remove the reader's drive letters until a media is inserted. [Settings] NoMediaNoLetter=1 USBDLM assigns them a drive letter as configured. " You can download that and configure it. It shouldn't need too much configuring, because you don't plan on doing anything except [Settings] NoMediaNoLetter=1 That's for USB bus, so it should not be hiding your DVD drive :-) If, someday, you get a USB bus DVD drive (I have one), then it could hide it too. Not that this matters of course. Any time you want the DVD drive, even to burn stuff, you'll be sticking some sort of media in it, and then it will magically appear. HTH, Paul |

With my past history, I don;t feel comfortable
changing drives letters when I've never done anything like this before and as you say, I don't want to screw anything up. Maybe it's better I leave it alone but I still think it's strange that the pop-up started now when I've had the 8500 and malwarebytes for years and it doesn't do it on the 780. I think it has something to do with the trial Malwarebytes premium. Robert |

How about this,....
I have been using my add/remove programs to find the support link for Malwarebytes for downloads. I'm thinking about deleting it and then using a clean link you provide to reinstall it. Would that work? As I say, the problem only recently started and I don't have this issue on the 780 and I'd rather not mess around changing drive letters. What do you think ? Robert |
