Perfectdisk Stops Prefetch - Greg Hayes?
I'm a little confused by your post. XP has never had a prefetch cleaning function. This has always had to be done by the user. If yours cleans this out on a 3 day cycle then it's because of a third part software not XP. There is no need to clean the prefet
ch that often unless you are constantly adding and removing programs. I had PD and found it cumbersome and awkward. I now use Diskeeper Version 8.0.478.0 This is different though. This along with Perfect disk are defragmenting utilities so if you are reffe ring to the boot optimization routine which XP resets every 3 days (if you have it configured that way) then this is different from the prefetch routine or file. You can clean out the prefetch by going start\run and type in prefetch and then hit ctrl-A to highlight all the shortcuts then click delete to clean them out and start fresh. Good Luck {:~) |

I believe there is a disconnect he PerfectDisk only optimizes the layout.ini file. No, PD optimizes the actual files listed in the layout.ini file, but not according to their loading patterns within the PF files. Windows does not manage Prefetch except to defrag layout.ini every three days. No, Windows manages the layout.ini file, runs a partial defrag of the files listed in layout.ini according to the prefetch folder files in order to lay them out for faster loading times (similar to 98's alignment process), and also deletes older and/or obsolete PF files. Normally Windows XP manages the prefetch folder all automatically. You never need to delete any files in that folder as any files not used in the last 3-4 days is automatically removed. The advice some people offer to clean out the prefetch folder is unnecessary. Only if there is a setting change does XP alter the handling of the prefetch files. The buildup of files in Prefetch is managed by neither Windows or PerfectDisk: managing Prefetch has always required a manual delete of the files or the use of a Prefetch manager. No, Windows manages the prefetch files completely on its own. No special manager is required. Thanks for trying to help, but in the last few weeks, I've read just about everything there is on the net about prefetching. I know quite well how it's supposed to work, what process is called, by what API, and how often. In fact, it works just fine in XP alone until I install PerfectDisk, and then it screws up. I just can't find what's being changed by PerfectDisk, and I'm hoping someone knows what it is. |

I have no management utility. In fact, I have nothing extra installed at all, other than SP1 and several apps for email, news, antivirus, etc. By default, XP cleans up the prefetch folder and does a partial defrag of the drive to optimize the layout of the files listed for quicker access. This is part of XP and has been since day one. |

As someone who has manually deleted prefetch files before, I'm interested. |

You continually respond "no" when there is no validity to your contention of what the OS performs on Prefetch. Windows XP Performance http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro...te/xpperf.mspx Defragmentation I/O performance is strongly influenced by the layout of files on disk. Files and directories that are heavily fragmented or dispersed across the disk will hurt performance. While Windows XP will automatically reposition some files to improve performance, this will generally be done infrequently and will usually include only a small fraction of the files on the disk. Therefore, it is a good idea to defragment the disk following an installation. Once every three days, by default, Windows XP will perform a partial defragmentation and adjust the layout of the disk based upon current use. The files to be moved are written in the file Layout.ini (found in the Prefetch directory under the System Root directory). Q |

Bill has been supplied the information on prefetch provided by both Microsoft and Raxco and remains insistent that XP cleans up the prefetch files every three days when all available information states otherwise. Frankly, he apparently is a bit reluctant to do his own research but is willing to crosspost his denial of the facts presented. Q |
