OK Peter - I'll top post this time to maintain the flow!
OS is Windows 7 64 bit I have just tried changing to Opera as you suggest. I unchecked the Windows Live Mail "allow access" box. When I tried the right click send to mail recipient, I just got a dialogue box saying that there is now email client associated. (I have never used Opera for email). Then, when I changed back, I unchecked the Opera "allow access" box and selected Windows Live Mail. Now I'm back to how I was before with nothing happening - but when I go back in, the check boxes for both Windows Live Mail and Opera are both checked, and the selection has moved back to "use my current email program". Just to let you all know this is now fixed.
In the end I went into Control Panel Uninstall A Program and clicked on Windows Live Essentials 2011. There, you are given an option to "Repair all Windows Live Programs". Once I had done that, the "Right Click Send To Mail Recipient" function worked, but "Send Link By Email" and "Send Page By Email" in IE8 were both greyed out. I then went in to "Set Program Access & Defaults" and selected "Windows Live Mail", and all worked ok. So - to everyone who made suggestions - thank you very much! Peter "Peter" wrote in message ... I just realised that Opera Mail does not have MAPI support, so that is why it did not work for Opera. Thunderbird has MAPI support, for what it's worth...
I was hoping to discover whether it was a problem with WLMail or with Windows' MAPIMail. It seems it was a problem with WLMail... To answer your questions: AV software running resident is Zone Alarm Extreme Security. Windows Defender is running resident too (I have read conflicting opinions as to whether or not I should allow both to run but they seem to get along just fine and I don't have any problems). WLM 2009 was the previous email program. However, it is a while now since I updated this and it had been working just fine. I can't remember doing anything different when the problem started.
