File find/search replacement for XP ?
Is there a substitute file or dll or something I can wedge into XP that
will give me the same simple "Start, Find, Files or Folders" search window that Win-98 has? Where it will search ALL THE FRIGGEN drive or drives by default? Including hidden or system folders? |

Are you finding it too difficult to use XP's own search utility, which
does all that and more? Well, not to worry: There are plenty of search utilities available on the internet, for free. Just search for them with Google. Oh...you're finding it too difficult to use Google? I can let my 7-year old show you how it's done. --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est XP Guy wrote: Is there a substitute file or dll or something I can wedge into XP that will give me the same simple "Start, Find, Files or Folders" search window that Win-98 has? File find/search replacement for XP ?
Leonard Grey improperly Top-Poasted:
Are you finding it too difficult to use XP's own search utility, When I occasionally have to sit in front of an XP machine and use the search facility, it's a pain in the ass compared to how fast and easy it is on win 9x. Open the file-find on win 9x and type in what you want. No additional clicking of sub-menus or check boxes. There are plenty of search utilities available on the internet for free. Just search for them with Google. Is there an actual _replacement_ for the XP file-find mechanism / interface? I don't want to wade through pages and pages of file-managment crap-ware. Oh...you're finding it too difficult to use Google? I can let my 7-year old show you how it's done. Nice one smart ass. Maybe your ****ing 7 year old can actually come up with an answer - you obviously can't. |

Don't remember where I found this but Method 1 worked for me. ****** So, here is what you need to do: Go to Start Go to Run Type in regedit When the Registry Editor comes up go to this path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Desktop Search\DS When you get to the folder “DS”, double-click on the entry “ShowStartSearchBand” and then change the value from “1? to “0?. Voila! That’s it! You should now be able to go back to the old Search Companion and have a way of searching the current contents of your folder. ***** Method 2 * Click Start, Run and type: regsvr32 /u "%programfiles%\Windows Desktop Search\wdsShell.dll" * Press ENTER. ****** also you can create reg file: 1. just copy the following to notepad: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Desktop Search\DS] "ShowStartSearchBand"=dword:00000000 2. save it as : ChangeBackToSearchCompanionOnXP.reg *** Microsoft's method (near the bottom of the page) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb490840.aspx -- \\\||/// ------------------o000----(o)(o)----000o---------------- ----------------------------()-------------------------- '' Madness takes its toll - Please have exact change.
