Default XP Professional 1-second idle HD accesses?

In new versions of XP Professional, what's hitting the HD about
once a second when the machine is idle?

And how do you disable it?

(New = downgrade version of XP Professional)

Maybe it's a Dell add-on? Vostro 1520, a business laptop.

Tried turning off the file indexing service? Or did you perhaps install
another indexing programs, like Google Desktop or Windows Search?

You could use SysInternals' Filemon to see what process is accessing the
files on the hard disk(s).

Yes, indexing is off.

Starting up with the diagnostic boot (so only 13 processes)
it still does it. Task manager shows explorer.exe getting a
page fault once a second, no I/O activity (read/write/other).

(Does a page fault cause a disk access? If so why doesn't it
do it just once to get the page and be done with it.)

It also does the same thing before login and after logout,
just hitting the HD once a second.

Did you check the size of the pagefile after the migration to WinXP?

It came with XP installed (and a DVD for windows7)

The pagefile though wouldn't cause a page fault owing to size; the memory size
would be what drove swapping, if anything.

I'm taking the HD light as indicating HD activity. No I/O activity shows up
in the task manager counts.
