How can I control the order of boot seqence

I have a (sticky-note like) program that loads at startup and stays in the
system tray. It loads just fine if it loads early in the boot sequence, but
if it loads toward the end, it leaves its tab in the task bar. The only way
to get rid of this is to right click the icon in the systray, choose about
(which opens a box with the version number) and click the OK on that box. I
know this isn't really a big problem, but just annoying.

Is there any way that I can control the order of the boot sequence without
resorting to third party software? I'm running XP Pro SP2 with all SP2
updates.

Not really - since things startup in various ways and we have no way of
knowing how this one starts up given what you have... Why not just start it
manually with a batch script (with other such applications) after you get
botted/logged in - that is one way to control the order.

Also - any reason you have not installed SP3? Soon you will not be
receiving updates for your Windows XP system if you are not at least SP3
level - and it has been out for a couple of years.

Unfortunately, I know nothing about batch scripts, or how to write and/or
implement them.

As to SP3, I've read from many sources and know some techs who still have
not installed SP3. I've been told that you can't undo it once you've
updated, and I've heard some real horror stories about things that happened
after updating to SP3. A lot of them are probably isolated incidents, and
I'm being silly, but there you have it. I plan on upgrading to Windows 7
fairly soon anyway.

Unless you really have some pretty new H/W and a lot of RAM I'd advise
you to stay with XP and hold off on Win7 until you go for a new machine.

Though sure, there have been a few reports of problems with sp3...
for most people it works very well.

If you have your data backed up
and sp3 would break your system...you could perform a repair install by
booting with an XP SP2 cd and you'd be back to sp2

Thanks Philo. I've run the Windows 7 upgrade advisor and my system should
be OK. My computer is custom built, and is 1 1/2 years old. I have 2 x
500GB hard drives (200 GB partition for OS and other programs), Intel Core 2
Quad 2.4 GhZ processor, 3 GB of ram, and an nVidia GeForce 9600GSO video
card. I know I'll have to reinstall all of my software, and there were a
few of the internal hardware bits that need their drivers updated. But I
think I should be good to go.

Do you have a suggestion as to whether we should go for Home Premium or
Professional? We have a home network - wired but with wireless capability.
I personally would go for the Professional just for the XP mode.

If I stay with XP for much longer, I think I will try installing SP3. I
have image backups on both my second internal drive and an external drive.

That hardware should run Windows 7 with no problems. Before you put out
the extra cash for Professional, for XP Mode, make sure your CPU
supports it, and that there is an option for Hardware Virtualization to
be turned on in the BIOS. Not every model of Intel Core 2 Quad
supports XP Mode.
